JOHNSONBURG – The St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen and Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders took home titles on Thursday afternoon at the 2012 Elk County Varsity Track and Field Meet hosted by the Johnsonburg Area High School.
In the boys' meet, St. Marys finished with 90 points, followed by ECC with 61 and Johnsonburg with 38. In the girls' meet, Elk Catholic ended the day with 100 points, while Johnsonburg had 62 and St. Marys 27.
Rose P. Johnson, 100, formerly of Weedville and Norwalk, CA and most recently of Elk Towers in St. Marys, died Wednesday, May 9, 2012 at the Elk Haven Nursing Home following a brief illness.
She was born on June 20, 1911 in Slippery Rock, daughter of the late Bernardino and Demonica Martini Palumbo.
Mrs. Johnson had been employed by Sylvania Radio Tube Plant in Emporium, the Prudential Insurance Co. and retired from Boeing Co.
ST. MARYS - Many people dream of someone special they would like to meet—a celebrity, a mentor, or a figure known the world over. St. Marys residents Mary and Jake Meyer realized that dream when they recently met Pope Benedict XVI at the Vatican in Rome.
ST. MARYS – Doctors and staff welcomed area residents to the new St. Marys location of the Laurel Eye Clinic at a grand opening held Thursday afternoon.
The clinic, housed in the Canadensis Building at 241 Depot St. in downtown St. Marys, is now accepting patients and offers routine family eye care, cataract evaluations, glaucoma management, macular degeneration management and free LASIK consultations.
The facility's eye-care specialists are Daniel L. Amsler, OD, Janice D. Dunkle, OD, and ophthalmologist Parag D. Parekh, MD, MPA.
ST. MARYS - The SMASD Board of Directors voted to approve a tentative budget at Thursday's meeting.
As is customary, the budget will be subject to review for a 30-day period before it is put to a final vote at next month's meeting. The preliminary budget includes a total of $24,339,949 in expenditures.
Superintendent Ann Kearney said that in preparing the budget, consideration is paid to various components which include faculty, enrollment, revenue, and expenditures, but also whether "our program is working."
ST. MARYS - In recognizing National Women's Health Week taking place May 13-19, Curves of St. Marys has planned a full slate of events featuring healthcare services during National Curves Day on May 17.
Festivities will kick off this Saturday with a rummage and bake sale at Curves, located inside the Franklin Center in downtown St. Marys, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. All proceeds will benefit the Team Curves Purple Power, the gym's American Cancer Society's Relay for Life team. The sale is being organized by Curves members Mary Hunt, Betty Polaski and Barb Orsich.
