SMA travels to Bradford today
The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch softball team raised their record on the season to 12-4 with a 9-0 victory over the Brookville Lady Raiders Tuesday afternoon at the SMAHS softball field.
The Lady Dutch return to action this afternoon when they travel to Bradford to take on the Lady Owls at 4:15 p.m.
The Elk County Catholic Crusaders picked up an 11-2 senior night victory over the Curwensville Golden Tide on Tuesday afternoon at Berwind Park in St. Marys.
"The sticks were alive tonight," said ECC coach Tom Zampogna. "They hit the ball very well, probably the best they've hit the baseball all year. Defensively, they played heads up. They played a good defensive game."
Property taxes will not be raised for residents of the St. Marys Area School District for the 2012 - 2013 fiscal year, according to SMASD Superintendent Ann Kearney.
At Thursday's meeting of the SMASD Board of Directors, Kearney said the district will be able to continue reducing property taxes for the 2012-2013 school year as a result of the distribution of state gaming funds through the Taxpayer Relief Act, also known as Special Session Act 1 of 2006.
In an effort to bridge the gap between school and career preparation, the St. Marys Area High School continues to offer a unique opportunity as part of its Technical Preparation Career Center, which allows students to utilize cooperative education through the Co-op School-to-Career program.
Recently, both students and participating employers were recognized for their efforts during the school’s annual Co-Op School-To-Work banquet held at the Red Fern.
Margaret C. Severance, 91, of 101 N. Mill St., Ridgway died Sunday, May 13, 2012, at Pinecrest Manor.
She was born Nov. 28, 1920, in Sargent, the daughter of Philip and Christina Amicone Scutella.
She married Guy J. Severance, who predeceased her on July 13, 1992.
Mrs. Severance was a member of St. Leo’s Catholic Church. She had been employed at Elk County General Hospital, retiring in 1985, after 35 years of service.
Virginia Marie Draper of 5441 Whispering Willow Way, Ft. Myers, Fla., died on Wednesday, April 18, 2012 in Florida following a brief illness.
She was born on Nov. 27, 1940 in Bridgeport, Connecticut, and married Jay Draper in August 1962.
They had two children, Donna Mancini of St. Augustine, Fla., and Jeffrey D. Draper, who preceded her in death on Jan. 17, 2008 in Pittsburgh. She had two grandsons whom she adored.
E. Jayne Trumbull, 74, of 6265 Shawmut Rd., Ridgway, died Monday afternoon, May 14, 2012, at Elk Regional Health Center following a brief illness.
She was born June 9, 1937 in Ridgway, daughter of the late Eugene and Grace (Reinhart) Lyle.
She was married to James C. Trumbull, who preceded her in death on Dec. 19, 2003.
