John J. Irwin

John J. Irwin, 89, of 959 Hickory Rd., St. Marys, died at Pinecrest Manor on Wednesday, May 16, 2012 following a brief illness.
He was born June 23, 1922 in Empire, Calif., a son of the late William and Cecelia Cummings Irwin.
In 1970 at St. Catherine's Church in Martinas, Calif., he married Ruth Schlimm Irwin, who survives.
Mr. Irwin was a member of the Queen of the World Church. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII.  He worked at Shell Oil Company in Martinas, Calif., for many years. 

Impact fee money usage debated at Jay Twp. meeting

WEEDVILLE - With the Act 13 impact fee legislation for gas and oil drilling signed into law in February, municipalities like Jay Twp. which stand to collect revenue under the legislation, are still sorting out what will be done with the funds and how much they can expect to receive. The disbursement of potential impact fee revenue and which municipal bodies would benefit was a topic of discussion at Thursday's meeting of the Jay Township Board of Supervisors.

Safety Days provides hands-on lessons, practices

Fifth grade students from throughout Elk County recently participated in the Progressive Agriculture Safety Days, a nationwide program geared toward teaching youth about safety issues dealing with agriculture, community, home and other topics.

Website can help connect area businesses with Marcellus Shale

RIDGWAY - At Monday's meeting of the Elk County Gas Task Force, Ridgway Borough Main Street Manager Michelle Bogacki said a new website launched by the Marcellus Shale Coalition (MSC) will help support regional economic efforts by bringing together area businesses with companies in the Marcellus Shale industry.

Lady Crusader softball falls to Kane 5-1

The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders dropped a 5-1 contest to the Kane Lady Wolves on Thursday afternoon at Benzinger Park. The game was picked up one-third of the way through the top of the fourth inning after being suspended due to rain last Wednesday.
The Lady Wolves held a 1-0 lead at the time the game was suspended last week and added another run Thursday in the fifth and three more in the seventh. ECC scored their only run in the sixth.
Abbey Bauer went the distance on the mound for ECC, giving up five hits, walking three, and striking out six.

Dutchman Jimmy Werner qualifies for PIAA meet in discus

KANE - The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch track and field squad competed at the District 9-AAA track and field championships held at Kane Area High School.
The Dutchmen placed fourth in the team race with 43 points. The Bradford Owls won the boys’ team title with 127 points, followed by DuBois with 112, Punxsutawney 61, St. Marys 43 and Clearfield 32.
The DuBois Area Lady Beavers won the girls’ AAA title with 115 points, followed by Bradford with 81.5, Clearfield 44 and Punxsutawney 35.5. The Lady Dutch will compete in the District 9-AA track and field championships Friday at Brookville.

ECC’s Scott Krellner and Alex Herzing wins 9-AA doubles crown

Elk County Catholic’s Scott Krellner and Alex Herzing captured the District 9-AA tennis doubles championship at DuBois on Wednesday.
In the championship match, Krellner and Herzing defeated St. Marys Area’s Dalton Gennocro and Jarrod Lipsey 6-3, 7-5.
Krellner and Herzing reached the championship match by defeating Johnsonburg’s Shane Bickford and Nate Field 8-2 in the first round. In the quarterfinals they defeated Alec Bouch and Fabio Fortunato of Brockway 10-8. In the semifinals they defeated St. Marys Area’s Michael Fox and Evan Lepovetsky 6-4, 6-3.

Dutchmen pick up 5-1 victory over Bradford Owls

The St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen recorded a 5-1 victory over the Bradford Owls on Wednesday afternoon at Berwind Park in St. Marys.
The Dutchmen scored twice in the second and added three more runs in the sixth while allowing the Owls to get one run in the seventh.
"It was a win," said St. Marys Area coach Tony Azzato. "We came out a little lazy the first couple innings. We were back on our heels a little bit in the box and on the field, but pitching has been keeping us in the past three games and it did again today."

ECC honors athletes at Spring Athletic Awards Program

The Elk County Catholic High School 2011-2012 Spring Athletic Awards Program was held on Tuesday evening in the ECCHS auditorium.
ECC Athletic Director Aaron Straub offered some brief opening remarks before turning the microphone over to Fr. Ross Miceli, who gave the invocation. ECC Athletic Association President Chris Schneider delivered a short welcome and Straub added a few acknowledgments to start off the program.

T-Bones Off Road Club plans ride

Members of the T-Bones Off Road Club are planning their third annual "Go Topless Litter Pickin' Jeep Ride" scheduled for Saturday, May 19.
"We will be meeting at Sandy Beach in Ridgway at 9 a.m. with the cleanup to begin at 10 a.m.," said Kellie Mocik, one of the event's organizers. "The public is invited to attend and there is no fee to volunteer, and donations will be collected for the Elk County Humane Society.
"They can always use towels, blankets, toys for the shelter animals, rubber gloves, air fresheners, paper towels, Dawn dish soap and monetary donations are always appreciated."
