Mabel M. Gillen-Ives, 56, of Tyler Road, Penfield, died Thursday, May 3, 2012 at home surrounded by her loving family.
She was born Nov. 18, 1955 in St. Marys, daughter of the late Paul J. and Mary "Tootie" (McClain) Gillen.
A homemaker, she lived in St. Marys until coming to Penfield in 1979. She was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church of Force, enjoyed car shows, was an avid Steelers fan, and was a loving mother and fun-loving aunt to many.

Lawrence A. Lyons

Lawrence A. Lyons, 74, of 601 Hall Ave., St. Marys, died unexpectedly at his residence on Friday, May 4, 2012.
He was born April 22, 1938 in St. Marys, son of the late Charles and Bertha Eckert Lyons.
On Aug. 1, 1959, he married Janet J. Murvine Crotzer. She preceded him in death on Sept. 19, 2005.

Frank E. Rollick

Frank E. Rollick, 93, of 215 Grandview Rd., St. Marys, died Friday, May 4, 2012 at Elk Regional Health Center following a brief illness.
He was born Feb. 26, 1919 in Rathbun, son of the late John and Mary Eskra Rollick. On May 11, 1946, in the Sacred Heart Church, he married Hazel I. Yonker. She preceded him in death on Jan. 7, 1997.

Signs of Suicide program receives Palumbo grant

Recently Dickinson Center, Inc. (DCI) received a $92,000 grant from the A.J. and Sigismunda Palumbo Charitable Trust for the organization's Signs of Suicide Prevention Program (SOS).
The grant ensures the continuation of the program, aimed at reaching middle and high school students in Elk and Cameron counties. The goal of the SOS program is to teach students the specific action steps needed to respond to signs of suicide by teaching and emphasizing the program's message of "A.C.T."-- Acknowledge, Care, Tell.

Area mothers discuss homeschool law

Mothers with The Elk County Homeschoolers said that while homeschooling has traditionally drawn criticism for a perceived lack of oversight and regulation, Pennsylvania's Home Education Law establishes strict requirements that homeschoolers must follow.
The mothers explained that while there is a great deal of freedom afforded homeschoolers in teaching and enriching their children, the guidelines for doing so as spelled out in Pennsylvania's Home Education Law, Act 169 of 1988, are stringent.
