As the kickoff to their fireworks fundraising season the St. Marys Area Chamber of Commerce is hosting their Second Annual Clam and Kielbasa Bake on June 2 from 3- 11 p.m. at the St. Marys Sportsmen's Club.
Elk County Prison Board officials met Tuesday morning for their quarterly board meeting and reviewed several items, including a recent audit and 100-percent compliance through a state inspection.
"The audit of the Elk County Prison funds was done by the Elk County auditors at the beginning of this year and everything was OK with all the accounts," said Elk County Prison Warden Gregory J. Gebauer. "For 2011, the prison generated $122,178.60. The prison was inspected by the state Department of Corrections on April 10 and we received 100-percent compliance.
Matt Quesenberry, director of Elk County's planning department, presented an award Tuesday morning to the county's board of commissioners.
The Pennsylvania Wilds planning team, of which Quesenberry is a member, recently received a 2012 Governor's Award for Local Government Excellence.
In light of the increased environmental awareness due to the Marcellus Shale gas industry impacting local municipalities on various levels, the Elk County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday re-pledged their commitment to safety.
William Granche, a member of Elk County C.A.R.E.S. [Citizens Advocating Responsible Environmental Stewardship], shared his views on the subject with the commissioners.

Hollaus R. "Hollie" Smith, 79, of Willow Street, Johnsonburg, died Monday, April 30, 2012 at Pinecrest Manor after a brief illness.
He was born on Sept. 19, 1932 in Johnsonburg, son of the late Hollaus W. and Jennie (Wheeler) Smith.
He married Jane L. (Steudler) on Jan. 7, 1952 in Johnsonburg; she survives.
The St. Marys Area boys tennis team defeated the Bradford Owls 9-0 on Monday afternoon in a match played at the St. Marys Area High School tennis courts.
At first singles, St. Marys' Michael Fox won easily 6-1, 6-1 against Cody Bly.
Dutchman Evan Lepovetsky defeated Connor Nickel 6-0, 6-1 at second singles.
At third singles, St. Marys' D.J. Challingsworth won his match 6-0, 6-2 against R.J. Jordan.
At fourth singles, Jarrod Lipsey came out on top for St. Marys Area 6-4, 6-4 against Josh Mongillo.
The Penn Relays Carnival held its high school races on Thursday, April 24. Teams from across the eastern United States took part in the event.Â
Elk County Catholic High School sophomore runner Kennedy Weisner qualified as one of 14 runners in the high school girls' mile race on Thursday. Weisner placed fifth in the race, running a time of 4:53.71. The race was won by Mary Cain of Bronxville, N.Y., running a 4:39.28. Weisner was the second-place finisher among Pennsylvania runners, finishing behind Angel Piccirillo of Homer Center, who ran a 4:47.90.Â
