ECCâ€™s Kennedy Weisner wins two silver medals; ECCâ€™s Jake Herbstritt a bronze
St. Marys Area High School junior Adair Gennocro won a gold medal at Saturdayâ€™s PIAA Track & Field Championships held at Shippensburg University by winning the Class AA 3200 run.
Gennocro won the event with a time of 10:36.22. She was seeded second in the event behind Boiling Springsâ€™ Meredith Speakman with a time of 11:13.99. Speakmanâ€™s seed time was 11:01.57. Speakman finished in second place in 10:47.88.
Gennocro also medaled in the 1600 run with a time of 5:02.16, good for fourth place.
Thomas W. Wickett, 67, of 26037 Lake City Rd., died Saturday evening, May 26, 2012, at his residence.
He was born Sept. 20, 1944 in St. Marys, son of the late Raymond and Leona (Kenard) Wickett.
He married Virginia Lee Vantassel on June 4, 1971. She preceded him in death on Nov. 11, 1991.
Mr. Wickett had resided in Lake City for the last 19 years and was a former Ridgway resident. He was Catholic by faith. He had served in the Pennsylvania National Guard for several years. He had been employed by Penn Pallet for five years.
Robert W. Struble, 91, of 300 Evers Ave., St. Marys, died on Saturday, May 26, 2012 at the Sarah A. Reed Center in Erie following an illness of the past several months.
He was born Jan. 14, 1921 in St. Marys, son of the late William and Viola Valentine Struble.
On June 15, 1946, in the St. Mary's Church, he married Elizabeth M. "Betty" Schneider, who survives.
Sarah Catherine Peters, infant daughter of Douglas A. and Danielle M. (Smith) Peters, was born and died on Thursday, May 24, 2012 at Elk Regional Health Center.
She is survived by her parents; two brothers, Zachary Peters of Ridgway and Douglas Peters III of Brockway; paternal grandparents Douglas and Bonnie Peters of Dagus Mines; maternal grandfather Leo Smith of Driftwood; and paternal great-grandmother Greta Peters of Ridgway.
Jane C. Bebble Lecker, 96, of 318 John St., St. Marys, where she made her home with her daughter, and formerly of Elk Towers, died on Sunday, May 27, 2012.
She was born April 21, 1916 in St. Marys, a daughter of the late Charles and Mildred Tierney Bebble.
On Nov. 8, 1941 in Sacred Heart Church, she married the late Leo F. Lecker, who preceded her in death on July 2, 1968.
Area Vietnam veterans now have their own memorial at Memorial Park in St. Marys.
Matthew Quesenberry Jr., a student at St. Marys Area High School and a member of Troop 199, completed his Eagle Scout project just in time for the Memorial Day holiday.
Quesenberry was given a few minutes to address the crowd during Monday morning's Memorial Day ceremony, and briefly recounted his inspiration for the project.
KERSEY - At Monday morning's Fox Twp. Memorial Day celebration, Elk County native Major Ted Kline (USMC-Ret.) was the keynote speaker.
"When I was a fifth grader here in 1975, I never would have imagined back then that this memorial would be on this site and that I would be asked to speak here," Kline said, referring to the adjacent Fox Twp. Elementary School and the veterans' memorial in front of the Fox Twp. Community Center.
Kline noted the importance of Memorial Day in the nation's history and the part it plays in local history.
ST. MARYS - Elk County Catholic High School honored the accomplishments of the Class of 2012 on Sunday afternoon during the school's 50th commencement exercises.
The 72 members of the senior class gathered Sunday morning for graduation activities, which began with a Baccalaureate Mass and a senior slideshow presentation in the school chapel and were followed by a brunch in the gymnasium.
"Memorial Day is meant for remembrance, and remembrance not only of the men and women who gave their lives so that we might be free, but of their families, to whom we also owe the deepest debt of gratitude," said Lieutenant Colonel Randall S. Weisner, honorary grand marshal of the community's Memorial Day parade and guest speaker at the Memorial Day ceremony at Memorial Park on Monday morning.
Kaylee Lynne Nicklas, infant daughter of Benedict Nicklas and Rebecca Hoffman, was born and died on Wednesday, May 23, 2012 at DuBois Regional Medical Center.
