St. Marys veterans' monuments dedicated

After more than a year of fundraising, planning and work, members of the St. Marys Servicemen's Burial Detail saw their vision realized during the dedication of veterans' monuments at the St. Mary's Catholic and Protestant cemeteries Saturday afternoon.
The idea for the monuments honoring the veterans laid to rest in the community's cemeteries was first discussed by detail members in March 2011, and they promptly got the ball rolling with outreach and fundraising efforts.

SMASD superintendent wary of participation fees

Many businesses got their start along Erie Avenue

A number of notable local businesses got their start along Erie Avenue, one of which was the Lyn-Clare Flower shop, which was started by Evelyn Chase and Clare Geitner. The business was one of several discussed by local historian Ray Beimel during a recent presentation he gave at the St. Marys Senior Center on the history of Erie Avenue.
Beimel explained that "at some point, Evelyn became allergic to flowers," and remarked to attendees that "many of you remember she was a great one for making paper flowers. The reason she did that was because she couldn't be around real flowers anymore."

Fox Township offering a variety of fun summer activities for youngsters

FOX TWP. – Fox Township has a multitude of clubs and other activities available for youngsters throughout the summer, according to Debby Agosti, Fox Township Recreational Facilities Director.
Agosti is in charge of the township's 15 summer help students who are responsible for coordinating and running the various events during the summer months.
"What I usually do is wait until I get my college students and then we put it out on the table what they want to bring to the park and what they want to offer to the kids. It's always nice to have that variety," Agosti said.

Genevieve Gehrlein Stock

Genevieve Gehrlein Stock, 93, of 501 Washington St., St. Marys, died on Friday evening, June 15, 2012 at the Elk Regional Health Center following a brief illness.
She was born May 5, 1919 in Erie, daughter of the late George and Veronica Faivre Gehrlein. On March 8, 1943 in St. Agatha’s Church in Meadville, she married William R. Stock, who preceded her in death on Sept. 30, 1998.
She had been a resident of the area since 1959. She was a graduate of Meadville High School and Allegheny College.

John A. Ferragine

John A. Ferragine, 99, of 231 Powers Ave., Johnsonburg, died Friday, June 15, 2012 in the evening at Elk Regional Health Center in St. Marys following a brief illness.
He was born March 28, 1913 in Catanzaro, Italy, son of the late Domonic and Mary Magra Ferragine. He married Mary C. Notarianni on Nov. 22, 1941 in Holy Rosary Church, Johnsonburg; she preceded him in death on Jan. 29, 1994.
He resided in Johnsonburg for most of his life. He was a 1933 graduate of Johnsonburg High School.

Irene G. Carnovale

Irene G. Carnovale, 82, of Johnsonburg, died Friday, June 15, 2012 at the Kane Lutheran Home.
She was born Aug. 10, 1929 in Czechoslovakia, daughter of the late Gustaf and Maria (Omcht) Gratza. On Oct. 10, 1953, she married Patrick “Patsy” Carnovale; he preceded her in death on Nov. 16, 1993.
She was a homemaker, also working with Stackpole Carbon of Johnsonburg, IPM of Ridgway, as a retail store demonstrator, and with Johnsonburg Youth Center for several years.

Katherine Z. Brem

Katherine Z. Brem, 92, of Kersey, died peacefully Friday morning, June 15, 2012, at her daughter Mary’s home, where she had resided since April.
She was born Oct. 15, 1919 in Force, daughter of the late Harvey and Catherine Bigley Hayes. On Sept. 13, 1941 in the Holy Cross Church in Rasselas, she married Ambrose A. “Bud” Brem, who preceded her in death on July 3, 1990.

St. Marys wins nightcap 10-9

The St. Marys Legion baseball squad raised their record to 4-0 on the season Saturday night at Berwind Park as they used a walk-off single by Mitch Meyer to record a 10-9 victory over the Fox Township squad.

St. Marys rallies past Fox 10-3 in nine innings

DAGUS MINES – The St. Marys American Legion Post 103 squad needed extra innings to pull off a come-from-behind victory on Saturday afternoon in the first game of a doubleheader against the team from Fox Township Post 511. The contest was played at the Fox Township Legion field, and the Post 103 team rallied for a 10-3 win in nine innings.
