ST. MARYS â€“ A number of area students headed off to college or other postsecondary education will have some help thanks to scholarships awarded through the Elk County Community Foundation (ECCF).
Students from Elk County and the surrounding area were awarded 87 scholarships totaling over $100,600 through the foundation, which helps individuals and groups achieve their philanthropic goals by assisting with the creation of endowments and other funding, and then awarding that funding locally to individuals, nonprofit organizations and others.
Recently the Fox Township Supervisors approved a request for a conditional-use permit for EOG Resources to install three additional gas wells in the Boone Mountain area.
The company's original request was to install a total of five new gas wells; however, two of the sites must be relocated in order to meet the township setback requirements.
Their approval of the request included the stipulation that the Fox Twp. Zoning Enforcement Officer Robin Singer be permitted on the well sites to inspect them, without interference, to assure the sites are meeting all township zoning requirements.
ECC finishes with fine 20-4 record
LORETTO - The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader softball team saw their season come to an end Friday afternoon at St. Francis University in Loretto, where they suffered a tough 2-1 loss to the Fannett Metal Lady Tigers.
Elk Catholic ended the season with a fine 20-4 record. They were the District 9 Class A champs and won the Elk County Tournament.
Marcy M. Hodgdon, 39, of 213 Faries St., Wilcox died on Thursday, June 7, 2012 at Elk Regional Health Center in St. Marys.
She was born on May 19, 1973 in Ridgway, daughter of Kenneth and Joyce Oertly Finn of Wilcox, who survive. She married William J. Hodgdon on July 20, 2006. He survives.
Mrs. Hodgdon resided in the Wilcox area all of her life. She graduated from Johnsonburg Area High School in 1991. She was Lutheran by faith and was a caring and thoughtful person whose children were the love of her life. She also loved animals, Penn State and the Pittsburgh Steelers.
John W. "Jack" Hanes, 82, of 121 Poplar Rd., St. Marys, died on Thursday, June 7, 2012 following a brief illness.
He was born July 1, 1929 in St. Marys, a son of the late Raphael "Ralph" and Kathryn Samick Hanes. On April 15, 1999, he married Betty Dornich Erich Hanes, who survives.
