Mary E. “Betty” McAlee

June 24, 2012

Mary E. “Betty” McAlee, 92, of The Lutheran Home, Kane, died Sunday, June 24, 2012 at the home after a short illness.
She was born March 17, 1920 in Johnsonburg, daughter of the late Jonah and Annie (Williams) Davies.
On July 15, 1941, she married Peter “Woots” McAlee. He preceded her in death on May 14, 1999.

Mary Elvie Kemmer Hollobaugh

Mary Elvie Kemmer Hollobaugh, 98, of Elk Haven Nursing Home and formerly of 983 Theresia St., St. Marys, died on Saturday evening, June 23, 2012 at Elk Haven Nursing Home following a brief illness.
She was born Dec. 30, 1913 in Brockport, a daughter of the late John and Nancy Ann Timblin Reed. On May 6, 1949 in St. Marys Rectory, she married the late William A. Hollobaugh, who preceded her in death on March 6, 2007.

Duct tape: Always a dad favorite

Just in time for Father’s Day, the ninth annual Avon Heritage Duct Tape Festival was held last weekend in Avon, Ohio, known as the “Duct Tape Capital of the World.” At the event, duct-tape lovers could find just about any kind of duct-tape creation, including clothing, parade floats, and sculptures. This year’s theme, “Duck Tape on Safari,” celebrated the Duck Tape brand by hosting a scavenger hunt, an arts and crafts tent to create safari gear, a parade and a free animal show by a local animal expert.

SR 255 project moving along on schedule

ST. MARYS – Work to improve a section of state Route 255 in St. Marys and Fox Township that began the first week of June is continuing on schedule, according to Marla Fannin, community relations coordinator for the Pennsylvania State Department of Transportation's District 2, based in Clearfield.
Fannin said although some complaints were received last week regarding congestion at the traffic light at Walmart SuperCenter in Fox Township, that issue has been resolved.

Jay Twp. board considers new Shale ordinance

The Marcellus Shale activity now ubiquitous in Jay Township was the subject of much discussion during Thursday's meeting of the Board of Supervisors, with some calling on the board to enact greater oversight of industry activities, companies, and personnel operating within the township.
Bob Coppolo of Weedville urged the board of supervisors to create an ordinance requiring companies and subcontractors to register with the township and formally announce their presence and intentions.

Memorial Park to cheer on the Buccos Wednesday with 'Buc Night'

Memorial Park and St. Marys Community Pool staff are teaming up on Wednesday to celebrate 'Buc Night'. The Pirates will be in the middle of a four-game series in Philadelphia against the Phillies, and Pirates fans are encouraged to come watch the game at the St. Marys Community Pool.
As a special promotion for the event, attendees who are not pool members can make a small donation and have the opportunity to swim prior to the start of the game.

Jay Twp. Board considers connecting to St. Marys water

At Thursday's regular meeting, the Jay Township Board of Supervisors urged the township's Water Authority to conduct a "feasibility study" regarding the possibility of the township obtaining its water through the City of St. Marys. Supervisors argued that doing so would likely come at a lesser cost than that of maintaining the township's water treatment plant.
This development comes on the heels of recent discussion of the board's reluctance to back $300,000 in loans for the township's water authority to be used in upgrading its water treatment plant.

DuBois major league softball stars edge St. Marys 2-1

The St. Marys Little League softball Major League All-Stars lost a close game to DuBois 2-1 on Thursday evening at Benzinger Park.
Rebekka Bauer went the distance on the mound for St. Marys, giving up three hits, walking three, and striking out five.
Sarah Snyder worked the mound for DuBois, giving up two hits, walking four, and striking out eight.
St. Marys' two hits came on singles by Olivia Catalone and Rachelle Armanini.
DuBois was led offensively by Erin Siders with a double. Laura Fatula and Katelyn Bender each also singled.

Parking request prompts discussion by Council

Although no action was taken on a request made to St. Marys City Council to eliminate on-street parking from 2 a.m. to 6 a.m. for the summer months, the request sparked a discussion among board members.
Several members of council, including City Manager Dave Greene, received the request from a resident at 551 Charles St. He stated his children are home during the summer and there is not enough room for all the vehicles in his driveway. Because of this, they often park on the street overnight and are ticketed.

Hot weather draws crowds to community pool

Summer is officially under way in St. Marys, and high temperatures have been drawing crowds to the St. Marys Community Pool throughout the week.
According to Greg Snelick, pool manager, by 4 p.m. Thursday afternoon 400 people had come through the doors. The pool opens at 1 p.m. Monday through Friday.
"In comparison, yesterday (Wednesday), we had close to 700 people come through [total], but in the first hour and a half, at 2:30 p.m., we had 380 people, which is quite a big number," Snelick said.
Snelick added that on Tuesday, there were also 400 people at the pool by 2 p.m.
