ST. MARYS - As part of their biennial recertification, lifeguards at the St. Marys Community Pool at Memorial Park exercised a number of rescue skills needed in various rescue scenarios during an inservice day held on Sunday.
According to pool manager Greg Snelick, nearly 400 people had visited the pool throughout the day on Sunday. Snelick said that the goal of the inservice days and recertification process is ensuring the public's safety through making sure those on guard are prepared for any number of emergency situations that may arise.
While Elk County Catholic High School students and their faculty advisors are working to put the finishing touches on the school's 2011-2012 yearbook, they know that they have some high standards to meet as the 2010-2011 edition was featured in Josten's 2012 "Gotcha Covered Look Book."
"We were the only school in Pennsylvania that was selected," said ECC yearbook advisor Laura Anderson. "There were over 3,000 schools that were involved and only 400 were chosen."
Throughout the community's history, the railroad has had a significant impact on the area around Erie Avenue.
During a recent presentation at the St. Marys Senior Center, local historian Ray Beimel discussed the ways that the railroad shaped the Erie Avenue area.
One photograph Beimel showed during his presentation was of Erie Avenue prior to the placement of the railroad tracks. He noted it is "one of the earliest pictures we have of Erie Avenue."
Stanley R. "Patsy" Redmond Jr., 85, of 804 Dill Hill Rd., Johnsonburg and 174 Soneto Ct., SE, Port St. Lucie, Fla, died Tuesday evening, June 12, 2012, at UPMC Hamot Medical Center, Erie, following a brief illness.
He was born on March 23, 1927 in Falconer, N.Y., son of the late Stanley R. and Mildred Tarnoski Redmond. On Sept. 23, 1950, in the Sacred Heart Church, St. Marys, he married Leah R. Dornish, who survives.
Ben A. Keller, 94, of 356 S. Mountain Rd., Emporium, and formerly of Kirksville, Mo., died peacefully on Tuesday afternoon, June 12, 2012, in St. Marys in the company of his family.
He was born Feb. 2, 1918, the son of U.S. Grant and Effie J. (Burns) Keller.

ST. MARYS - Hundreds of emergency responders converged on Elk Regional Health Center (ERHC) on Monday as part of a staged disaster event designed to assess the effectiveness and efficiency of the hospital's emergency preparedness.
The scenario staged Monday involved a tornado having struck the C-wing of Pinecrest Manor.
During the drill, residents of Pinecrest Manor were transported to a designated section of the building, just as they would be in the event of an actual tornado touching down.
Erie Avenue has long been associated with the community's emergency service providers. Today, both the St. Marys City Police Department and Crystal Fire Department are located along the roadway, and anyone in need of emergency assistance can simply call 9-1-1, or even contact either department directly. Early in the community's history, that was not the case, however.
"There was a time in St. Marys where [if] you needed a policeman, you picked up the phone and you called Rocky Fleming, the night clerk at the Mullendean," said local historian Ray Beimel.
The area's newest antique shop, Trinkets-n-Treasures, celebrated its grand opening Monday at its storefront, located at 28 Railroad St. on the Diamond in downtown St. Marys.
Owners Troy Cartwright and Sandy Drone said they welcome customers to browse the shop's selection of relics from the past, ranging from furniture, housewares, tools and jewelry to books, religious items, advertising, military and more.
RIDGWAY - At Monday's meeting of the Elk County Gas Task Force held at the new 911 Center in Ridgway, McKean County Emergency Management Agency Director Bruce Manning gave task force members an update of efforts to educate first responders about natural gas and oil sites.

PUNXSUTAWNEY – "The only disappointment tonight was that we didn't show our best," said ECC baseball coach Tom Zampogna following the Crusaders' 17-0, six-inning loss to the Bishop McCort Crushers on Monday afternoon in Punxsutawney. "Whether we lost or won isn't so much the disappointment-- it's the fact that I know we've got a better team than what we brought to the field tonight."
Zampogna's remarks summed up the Crusaders' efforts in the PIAA Class A Western Final match-up.
