Robert (Bob) Alan Cheatle, 67, died on Tuesday, June 5, 2012.
He was born in St. Marys on April 3, 1945, son of the late Vernon Jerome Cheatle and Ann Matilda (Young) Cheatle.

SMASD passes 2012 budget

Student's cartoon earns top place in national competition

Elk County Catholic High School freshman Tony Hanes captured first place for his editorial cartoon as part of a national competition.
"It shows how America is in debt and how we always rely on China to get us out," Hanes explained his cartoon.
The winning cartoon depicts U.S. President Barack Obama stranded in a hole referred to as "Debt Valley" while being rescued by a helicopter with "China" inscribed on it.

2012 Relay for Life event a 'big success'

FOX TWP. - A massive show of community support for the 2012 Elk County Relay for Life was on display at the Fox Township Community Park on Friday during the opening ceremony of the 24-hour event.
Emcee Roben Daghir said the goals were to increase awareness of cancer in the area and raise the funds needed to combat the disease, and termed the event was a "big success." Monetary donations for this year's event totaled roughly $13,450.

Erie Avenue impacted by fires throughout community's history

In addition to new development, the downtown area has also been altered by fires throughout the community's history.
Local historian Ray Beimel discussed several of the more prominent fires that impacted the Erie Avenue area during a recent presentation at the St. Marys Senior Center.
The earliest fire detailed by Beimel during his presentation occurred on the afternoon of July 25, 1880. According to Beimel, the fire began in the apartment located above the Coryell and Russ' store, which he indicated was located where Dr. Jolly's office is today.

Hilda J. Gasbarre

Hilda J. Gasbarre, 81, of 121 Polk Ave., Ridgway, died early Monday morning, June 11, 2012, at Pinecrest Manor following a lengthy illness.
She was born June 24, 1930, in Johnsonburg, daughter of the late Walter J. and Grace (Meise) Winters. She married Gene L. Gasbarre on Dec. 28, 1950; he survives. She had resided in Ridgway for the last 65 years and was a member of St. Leo Catholic Church.
Hilda enjoyed playing bingo and watching Pittsburgh sports. She had been employed at Quality Components for 30 years.

James P. Raybuck

James P. Raybuck, 82, of 428 Smith St., Ridgway, died Sunday, June 10, 2012, at Elk Regional Health Center.
He was born Jan. 21, 1930, in Ridgway, the son of Clair and Elbirta Penfield Raybuck.
On Nov. 29, 1958, in Brookville, he married Lena Dunn, who survives.
Mr. Raybuck had resided most of his life in Ridgway. He was Methodist by faith. He was a member of the American Legion and the Ridgway Elks. He had been employed as a train conductor with the Pennsy Railroad.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by several nieces and nephews.

Patricia A. Rees Covel

Patricia A. Rees Covel, 80, of Pinecrest Manor, died Saturday, June 9, 2012, at her residence following a lengthy illness.
She was born Aug. 5, 1931 in Ridgway, the daughter of the late Paul and Cecilia Scherer Rees.
On Aug. 6, 1960, she married Harry N. Covel; he survives.
Mrs. Covel was a lifelong Ridgway resident. She was a member of St. Leo Catholic Church and the Good Samaritan Society. She was a graduate of St. Leo’s School. She had been employed at United Natural Gas until 1960.

Sarah Martin Kronenwetter

Sarah Martin Kronenwetter, 76, of California, Md., died surrounded by her loving family on June 5, 2012 in Washington, D.C.
Born on August 23, 1935 in Ridgway, she was the daughter of the late Frederick and Dorothy Martin.
She was the loving wife of Ted Kronenwetter, whom she married on Aug. 20, 1960 in St. Marys.
Sarah graduated from St. Marys Area High School in 1953 and moved from St. Marys to St. Mary’s County, Md., in November 2008. She worked as a teacher’s aide for 20 years, retiring in 1997.
Sarah loved her family especially her grandchildren.

Joseph William Cole, 87, Walnut St, DuBois, died at his residence at 10:40 a.m. on June 10, 2012, surrounded by his loving family.
Born Nov. 1, 1924 to Joseph H. Cole and Josephine Willis Cole in Crafton, Pa., he was preceded in death by his three siblings, Samuel H. Cole, Annah M. Doak, and Howard C. Cole. He is survived by his wife, Janet Shenck Cole
