FOX TWP. - "It turned out to be a fiasco," said Charles Bloam III, tax collector for the City of St. Marys, in describing the realization of Pennsylvania's Act 32 requiring counties to consolidate the collection of earned income tax (EIT) to a single collector.
The recent breakdown of the county's contract with CENTAX, the firm contracted to collect and disburse earned income tax to local municipalities and school districts, has highlighted difficulties associated with the state's Act 32 legislation.
JOHNSONBURG – Johnsonburg Fire Chief Bob Dickey updated the Johnsonburg Borough Council during their regular meeting Monday on two fires that as of recent have been a cause for alarm to many of the residents within the borough of Johnsonburg and surrounding areas.
The first fire Dickey touched on was at the Old Johnsonburg Hotel along East Center Street that was reported to have ignited at approximately 9 a.m. on Thursday, June 28.
Leander C. Meyer, 75, of 185 Center St., Elk Towers, St. Marys, and formerly of 871 Vine Rd., St. Marys, died Tuesday morning, July 10, 2012 at Elk Regional Health Center.
He was born Nov. 16, 1936 in St. Marys, son of the late James and Regina Young Meyer.
On Nov. 14, 1959, in the Queen of the World Church, he married Margaret “Margie” Koch, who preceded him in death on March 3, 2009.
He was a lifelong resident of the area and was a graduate of Central Catholic High School, Class of 1955. He was a retired employee of the Keystone Carbon Company.
FOX TWP. - A special meeting of the Elk County Tax Collection Committee was held Monday at the Fox Township Municipal Building in response to the failure of a tax collection firm contracted by the county to collect and distribute earned income tax (EIT) to its school districts and municipalities in accordance with Act 32 legislation.
The Fox Township Supervisors discussed details of a proposed policy for use of the Fox Twp. Community Building during their most recent meeting.
Supervisor Dave Mattiuz said he had Kathy Dowie, township secretary, draw up a policy in order to have information pertaining to the building's use in one document.
"I think in general it looks like a pretty good policy," Mattiuz said, adding Dowie did a good job on the document.
