Senior softball stars fall to Corry 7-2 in first game of Section 1 Tournament

The St. Marys Little League Softball Senior League all-star team came up short 7-2 in the first game of the Section 1 Tournament against Corry on Thursday evening at Benzinger Park in St. Marys.
The game was an offensive struggle early on as the first run in the game was only scored in the fifth inning, though both squads did leave runners on base early in the game.

Savannah O. (Fine) Straub

Savannah O. (Fine) Straub, 23, of 797 Washington St., St. Marys, died unexpectedly early Wednesday morning, July 11, 2012.
She was born Jan. 4, 1989 in Washington County, Pa. She was a lifelong resident of the area and was a graduate of St. Marys Area High School, Class of 2007.
She had also attended Penn State Altoona. She was an employee of Dino’s Place. Savannah enjoyed photography, reading and her cat, Nikkita.

Omar H. Ives

Omar H. Ives, 88, of Tyler, died Tuesday, July 10, 2012 at DuBois Regional Medical Center, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born May 3, 1924 in Mason Hill, son of the late Omar and Myrtle (Hanscome) Ives.
He married Lillian (Silinsky), who survives, and the couple was married for 68 wonderful years.
Mr. Ives lived most of his life in Tyler. He served in the Navy during WWII. He worked many years at Airco Speer Carbon of St. Marys and was a member of the American Legion of Weedville. He enjoyed the woods, hunting, traveling, and most of all, his family. 

Vaughn C. Erich

Vaughn C. Erich, 63, of 601 Brandycamp Road, Kersey, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, July 10, 2012 at Elk Regional Health Center.
He was born Jan. 1, 1949 in St. Marys, a son of the late LeRoy "Curley" and Helen "Honey" Geitner Erich.
Vaughn was a lifelong resident of the area and graduated from SMAHS, class of 1968. He had been employed at SGL Carbon for more than 40 years. He was a car enthusiast and enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting, fishing and riding his 4-wheeler. He also enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his nieces and nephews.

Mary Malone knew she had a project on her hands, but as a director of the Historical Society of St. Marys and Benzinger Township, she was used to that. What she didn’t know was that it would take her two years and counting, and lead her to discovering more about her own family history.
“I was at a historical society meeting, and afterwards I was going through one of the books on the shelves, and it was an Airco Carbon book—Speer Carbon—and I found my dad’s picture in there, and I got so excited because it was before I was even born,” Malone said.

Fate of rail corridor trail rests with local residents

LANTZ CORNERS – Local residents need to step to the plate and coordinate efforts to develop a trail over the corridor for the defunct Knox and Kane Railroad.
Without a local organization enthusiastically behind the proposal, the "Rails To Trails" concept won't happen.
This is the message delivered Wednesday by state and county officials during a presentation at the Barrel House Restaurant at Lantz Corners.
The Mt. Jewett Rotary Club hosted the forum.

Band bringing back old-fashioned concerts

The days of old-fashioned concerts in the park are being revived, as the Elk-Cameron Community Band plans to host two events in local parks in July.
Area residents are encouraged to bring their lawn chairs and enjoy an array of musical numbers, lemonade and cookies.
Each concert begins at 7 p.m. The first will be held Tuesday, July 17 at Memorial Park on Wolfel Avenue in St. Marys and the second will take place the following evening, Wednesday, July 18 at the Fox Township Community Park situated along SR 948. In case of rain, the St. Marys concert will be moved to the S. St. Marys Street
