Bonnie M. Keneske

Bonnie M. Keneske, 56, of 3374 Long Level Rd., Johnsonburg, died Saturday afternoon, June 30, 2012, at her residence following a short illness.
She was born Nov. 7, 1955 in Bradford, daughter of the late Harold H. and Shirley VanTassel Hunt.
On July 16, 1977 in Holy Rosary Church in Johnsonburg, she married Joseph R. Keneske, and he survives.
She resided in Johnsonburg since 1978.
She graduated from Gowanda High School, Gowanda, N.Y., in 1975 and attended BOCES for a degree in nursing.
She was a member of Holy Rosary Church and the Rolfe Sportsmen's Club.

Residents seek relief following water main break

A water main break on 500 block of North St. Marys Sunday evening sent water over 30 feet into the air leaving the power lines dripping and many residents seeking higher ground.
The Crystal Fire Department was called to the scene of the incident outside 523 N. St. Marys St. for public service at 8:53 p.m.
Ralph Samick who occupies the 523 N. St. Marys St. residence along with his wife Mary Ann said at the time of the water main break he was sitting on the front porch listening to the radio when he noticed water collecting around his feet.

St. Marys meets Bradford at Eldred Tuesday

The St. Marys Little League Softball Senior all-stars opened play in the District 10 Tournament Sunday with a 9-7, eight-inning victory over the Brockway all-stars at Benzinger Park.

St. Marys Legion downs Smethport 10-1 to end regular season

The St. Marys American Legion Post 103 baseball squad ended their regular season with a 10-1 victory over Smethport on Saturday evening at Berwind Park in St. Marys. Some early Fourth of July celebrations in the neighborhood added to the celebratory atmosphere for the Post 103 squad as they took the early lead and never looked back, finishing their season with an 11-3 record and securing the second seed in the Elk County League playoffs behind undefeated Wilcox.

Major League baseball stars down Ridgway

St. Marys travels to Fox Twp. tonight
The St. Marys Little League Baseball Major League all-stars stayed alive in the District 10 South Division Tournament with a 15-1, four-inning victory over the Ridgway All-Stars Saturday afternoon at Memorial Park.
St. Marys will travel to Fox Township this evening for a 6 p.m. game against the Fox Township squad. Fox defeated Brockway by a 7-5 score on Saturday.

National Guard hauls soldier’s ‘Harley’ to Kane

It was a bittersweet road trip for six members of the field maintenance shop at the Pennsylvania Army National Guard base in Cambridge Springs near Erie.
Traveling in two large National Guard work trucks, the group came to Kane on Friday to deliver a 2010 Harley-Davidson motorcycle to the Tom and Sue VanGiesen residence at 137 Lincoln St.
The “Harley” was the pride and joy of Staff Sgt. Ken VanGiesen, a Kane native who was killed last July while serving in Afghanistan with the National Guard.

Services for homebound outlined at Chamber forum

Many services are available in the home for the elderly, the disabled, the sick and others who require help with medical or hygiene needs.
Tiffany Winkler, private duty manager for home support services for Community Nurses, Inc., outlined some of these programs during a presentation Friday at a Kane Chamber of Commerce breakfast forum at the Kane Manor.
She said the “main purpose” the services permits residents to “stay in their own homes” rather than enter a hospital, nursing home or assisted living facility.

Learning center restroom delayed

ST. MARYS – Due to the high cost of purchasing a pre-engineered public restroom facility from Oregon, the Elk County Conservation District is pursuing other alternatives for the West Creek Wetland Learning Center.
"I have met with the [Elk County] commissioners and the planning commission a few times over the past few weeks to discuss the project," said District Manager Steve Putt. "We have kind of decided to take a step back."
