St. Marys Legion ends season with loss to French Creek Valley

The St. Marys Legion baseball team saw their run in the Region 8 Tournament come to an end on Monday evening with a loss to French Creek Valley. The 14-4, eight-inning loss was St. Marys' second in the double elimination tournament.
"Once again it was just a matter of four or five innings where we played good ball, and then the wheels came off," said St. Marys manager Fran Pasi after the game.

Wilcox Legion remains unbeaten in Region 8 play

Wilcox meets French Creek Valley tonight

The Wilcox Legion squad remained undefeated in the Pa. American Legion Region 8 Tournament with a 14-6 victory over the Millcreek team.
Wilcox will now meet French Creek Valley tonight at 7:30 p.m. at Berwind Park.
Today’s first game will see Albion taking on Millcreek in an elimination game. Albion is the Erie County champ while Millcreek in the Erie County runner up.
In last night’s nightcap, which lasted almost 3 1/2 hours, both teams had 14 hits.

Conservation District receives appreciation award

The Elk County Conservation District was recognized for its 50 years of service during a two-day annual joint conference hosted by the Pennsylvania Association of Conservation Districts and the State Conservation Commission.
District Manager Steve Putt reported attending a conference held in Scranton on July 9 and 10 to accept the Award of Appreciation.
"At the conference they recognized a few districts, including us," Putt said. "This is our 50th anniversary, so they gave us this certificate to honor those 50 years."

Pittsburg, Shawmut, & Northern Railroad got its start in St. Marys

According to local historian Ray Beimel, the Pittsburg, Shawmut, and Northern Railroad "in a sense started in St. Marys."
Beimel recently discussed the railroad's history during a presentation at the St. Marys Senior Center, explaining that the railroad was used to transport coal from mines in Elk County to communities in upstate New York.
"Kaul and Hall built a railroad that ran from St. Marys to a place called Hyde, which is outside of Brockway, and the whole point of that was to haul coal from the mines at Brandy Camp and that area and bring it up to St. Marys," Beimel said.

Butterfly release for hospice coming up

A poignant ceremony that offers area residents the opportunity to honor someone special will again be held by Community Nurses, Inc.
The Community Nurses Butterfly Release for Hospice will be held at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 5 at The Serenity Garden, behind the organization's building on the campus of Elk Regional Health Center in St. Marys. The general public is invited to the release, which allows area residents to honor their loved ones and benefits the Community Nurses' Hospice program.

Gennocro reflects on winning state championship

On May 26 at Shippensburg University's Seth Grove Stadium, St. Marys Area High School's Adair Gennocro joined the ranks of the PIAA state champions as she claimed her first career title in the PIAA Class-AA girls' 3200-meter run.
Gennocro, who will begin her senior year at SMAHS in the fall, recently reflected upon the race and what it is like being a state champion. She is the first SMAHS athlete to win a state championship in track and field. Her photo will eventually hang in the foyer of the school along with that of Jeff Foster, who won a state championship in cross country in 1973.

Shawn M. “Buck” McCabe, 41, of Johnsonburg, and recently of Rock Hill, S.C., died unexpectedly on Sunday, July 22, 2012.
He was born Dec. 5, 1970 in Ridgway, son of Robert and Patricia (Klink) McCabe of Johnsonburg.
