JOHNSONBURG - Criminal charges have been filed in district court against a father and son for their alleged respective roles in arsons perpetrated in Johnsonburg and Ridgway in 2008 and most recently in 2012.
Francis Anthony Milliard, 54, and Anthony Karl Milliard, 28, both of Ridgway, have been charged with multiple counts of felony arson and related offenses, felony criminal conspiracy, criminal mischief, recklessly endangering another person, insurance fraud, and disorderly conduct.
Got some loose change lying around the house? Northwest Savings Bank branches in St. Marys, Ridgway and Johnsonburg are collecting unwanted Canadian currency to benefit the Elk County Humane Society.
Members of the Crystal Fire Department responded to a call at Elk Regional Health Center on Thursday evening. Firefighters quickly got to work on a third-floor portion of the building where they doused a fire on the structure's roof. Shown above is the CFD's snorkel truck in use as a firefighter hands off equipment to a fellow firefighter, and below is a firefighter running hose. According to reports, patients were never in any danger and the fire was quickly contained.
ST. MARYS - The Elk County Tax Collection Committee met Wednesday at the Francis S. Grandinetti Elementary School in Ridgway to further discuss measures involved in replacing Elk County's current earned income tax (EIT) collector following the firm's breach of contract.
CENTAX was contracted to collect and disburse earned income tax monies to Elk County municipalities following the standardization of that state's earned income tax system under Act 32, which mandated one EIT collector per county as well as the formation of county tax collection committees.
Carl E. “Jim” Pearson, 75, of Dahoga Rd, Wilcox, died Tuesday, July 25, 2012 at Kane Community Hospital.
Carl was born Oct. 19, 1936 in New Brighton, the son of the late Harry and Margaret (Doyle) Pearson, and came to Wilcox at an early age, where he was raised by his family members, the late Victor and Florence Pearson.Â

ST. MARYS – It was gradual. It was dominant. It's a Region 8 championship for the Wilcox American Legion baseball team.
Wilcox scored in seven of eight innings and outhit Albion 16-3 to capture the American Legion Region 8 tournament with a 12-0, 8-inning victory over Albion in the championship game at Berwind Park Wednesday afternoon.

Keeping a close eye on key federal legislation, North Central Pennsylvania Regional Planning and Development [NCPRPDC] officials are carefully watching the Federal Agriculture Reform and Risk Management Act [House Resolution 6083], which was advanced July 12 by the House Agriculture Committee.
ST. MARYS - On March 4, Glenn Bauer of St. Marys, a husband and father of twin sons, died unexpectedly at the age of 44 as the result of an embolism. In response to his death, friends of the family have rallied around his wife Connie and 14-year-old sons Nick and Brady, and planned a benefit for them to take place Aug. 4 at Edgewood Hall in St. Marys.
Doors will open at 2 p.m., with the event continuing until midnight.
The efforts to offer the family a helping hand in their time of need have been spearheaded by event coordinator Kathy Kunes, a personal friend of the Bauer family.

During a recent presentation on the history of the Pittsburg, Shawmut, and Northern Railorad, local historian Ray Beimel discussed the high operating costs that plagued the business.
According to Beimel, the main purpose of the railroad was to haul coal, and a branch known as the Kersey Railroad was also formed to transport coal from the mines located in Byrnedale and Force.

The Wilcox Legion baseball team is in today’s championship contest despite losing by an 11-6 score to French Creek Valley in the nightcap of the Region 8 Tournament Tuesday at Berwind Park.
Today’s schedule will see French Creek Valley taking on Albion at 1 p.m., with the loser being eliminated. The winner of that game will take on Wilcox for the Region 8 title in a game scheduled for a 4 p.m. start.
