Mabel S. Riccadonna

July 20, 2012

Mabel S. Riccadonna, 90, a resident of Silver Creek Terrace and formerly of Armory Road, St. Marys, died unexpectedly Friday, July 20, 2012 at Elk Regional Health Center.
She was born March 20, 1922 in Cardiff, daughter of the late Joseph and Teresa Calliari Serafini. On Nov. 4, 1939 in the St. Joseph’s Church in Force, she married Carlo Riccadonna, who preceded her in death on June 25, 1994.
Mrs. Riccadonna was a lifelong resident of the area and attended Weedville schools. She was a retired employee of the Stackpole Carbon Co. and was a member of the Sacred Heart Church.

Jane (Zawacki) Muroski

 Jane (Zawacki) Muroski, 87, formerly of Ridgway and Johnsonburg, died Sunday, July 15, 2012, in Winter Park, Fla.
Born in Ridgway, she was a resident of Johnsonburg most of her life. She is the widow of William Joseph Muroski, who died in 1979.  
She moved to St. Cloud, Fla. in 1981. Jane proudly served in the Women’s Army Air Corps in World War II.

Jay Twp. residents fear unsecured Shale explosives

JAY TWP. - Concern regarding explosives being stored in Spring Run was discussed with residents at Thursday's meeting of the Jay Township Board of Supervisors, with residents fearful that the explosives could easily be stolen.
Bob Coppolo of Weedville said to his knowledge, not one blasting permit has come through Jay Twp. and asked the supervisors if they had any additional information on the subject.
"I'm not even sure if they have a license to do it. I've asked them and they've ignored me," Supervisor Fran Gustafson said.

Jay Twp. Supervisors approve Water Authority loan; nix proposed connection to St. Marys water

"I'm not saying it's the perfect way out, but we are in trouble," said Jay Township Supervisor Fran Gustafson in advocating the possibility of Jay Township connecting to the St. Marys water service at Thursday's meeting of the board.
But despite Gustafson's objections, fellow Supervisors Jeremy Rippey and Murray K. Lilley voted to guarantee $107,000 in loans for the Jay Township Water Authority to be used in upgrading the township's water treatment plant, effectively ending any talk of St. Marys supplying the township with water.

Bavarian Fall Fest Committee making progress

Monumental efforts have already been made, but there is a lot more work to do to make the third annual Bavarian Fall Fest the success the festival committee is aiming for.
Bavarian Fall Fest Committee Chairperson Dolly Wehler and Vice Chair Paula Weyant said they are excited at the level of interest shown for this year’s event, which will run from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 21, 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 22, and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 23.

Dickinson to host Storytime in the Park event

Combining the outdoors and storytime together, Dickinson Center Inc.'s (DCI) Children's Prevention Services is hosting their inaugural "Storytime in the Park," taking place Friday, Aug. 10 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
DCI Parents as Teachers (PAT) Educator Lynn Floravit has taken the activity a step further by turning it into the "I Spy a Spider" walking storytime event being held at Benzinger Park in St. Marys.

Weekly Activity Nights are a popular addition at Luhr Park

When area residents mention going to hang out at one of the area parks, they are usually referring to either Memorial or Benzinger Park, but that may soon change: Jason Schreiber, recreation director at Memorial, Luhr, and Kaulmont parks, and his staff recently began holding activity nights at Luhr Park on Wednesday evenings, and so far the events have been met with considerable success.
The first Activity Night at Luhr Park was held last week and had a turnout of between 50 and 75 people.

Roll-your-own shops up in smoke with new federal law

ST. MARYS - New federal legislation that reclassifies roll-your-own cigarette shops as manufacturers and all but prohibits the use of automated roll-your-own machines has resulted in the closure of many stores and left those remaining struggling to turn a profit.
Section 100122 of the federal Highway Bill signed into law by President Barack Obama on July 6 subjects owners of roll-your-own cigarette machines to the same licensing rules as corporate cigarette manufacturers and requires they tax their product at rates equal to those of packaged cigarettes.

Allegheny Motorsports looking to rev up business

ST. MARYS - On Friday Allegheny Motorsports is opening its doors for business, offering a wide range of services to area motorcycle and ATV owners.
Co-owners Scott and Joni Holterback of Daguscahonda encourage riding enthusiasts to stop by the shop on Friday and Saturday as they plan to offer special promotions, door prizes, giveaways and light refreshments during their grand opening.

Nancy L. Farr

Nancy L. Farr, 74, of 160 East Ave., Johnsonburg, died Wednesday, July 18, 2012 at the Lutheran Home in Kane following a lengthy illness.
She was born March 14, 1938 in Ludlow, daughter of the late Anthony (Tony) and Fannie Visco Raymondo. She married George J. Farr on March 2, 1957; he survives.
She resided in the community for 55 years. She graduated from Kane High School in 1956. She was a member of Holy Rosary Church, Johnsonburg, and loved homemaking and family life.
