Milliard arraigned on new charges

August 31, 2012

RIDGWAY - New charges, including multiple drug offenses and illegal possession of firearms, have been filed against Francis Anthony Milliard, 54, of Ridgway, currently incarcerated on arson and related charges in connection with two residential fires in Elk County, as well as charges of attempted murder and assault stemming from Milliard's alleged beating of a Ridgway man.

Benefit concert for F.I.R.S.T. foundation scheduled for Saturday

WILCOX – Bailey Pretak and friends will present “Release the Butterfly,” a concert to benefit the Foundation for Ichthyosis and Related Skin Types on Saturday, Sept. 1 at 7 p.m. at the Johnsonburg Area High School Auditorium. 
The concert is free of charge, but a free-will offering will be taken and all proceeds go to the F.I.R.S.T. foundation to fund research and publicity.  This weekend’s concert will feature inspirational music by dancers and singers who will tell a story of those who have Ichthyosis.

In celebration of Labor Day

The St. Marys Heritage Preservation Group has put a display in the storefront window of the building next to Stewart's Jewelers on South Michael Street. It features photos of laborers of the past, as well as items of the present that have helped make St. Marys the proud, self-sustaining, family-oriented community that it is today.

Linda A. Gies

August 31, 2012

Linda A. Gies, 65, of 1271 S. Michael Rd., St. Marys, died on Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2012 at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh following a lengthy illness.
She was born April 17, 1947 in St. Marys, a daughter of the late Raymond and Bertha Wehler Schneider.
On Nov. 18, 1967 in Queen of the World Church, she married Robert Gies, who survives.

David L. “Keppy” Kephart

August 31, 2012

David L. “Keppy” Kephart, 68, of 139 Lynch Rd., St. Marys, died Wednesday, August 29, 2012 at the DuBois Regional Medical Center following a brief illness.
He was born Oct. 7, 1943 in Clearfield, son of the late Robert D. and Mary Vena Landsberry Kephart.
On Sept. 23, 1995 in St. Marys, he married Patricia A. Breindel, who survives.

Crusader golfers record win over Dutch squad

The Elk County Catholic Crusader golf team handed the St. Marys Area Flying Dutch squad their first loss of the season in dual match play Thursday at the Bavarian Hills Golf Course.
Elk Catholic defeated St. Marys by a 203-225 score.
Medalist for the day was Elk Catholic’s Elliott Struble with his 36.
Behind Struble for ECC was Jess Jaynes with a 40 followed by Mitchell Struble with a 41, Brandon Schlimm 42, Kristy Hanes 44, Bruno Cavalline and Ben Reuscher 45 and Drew Meyer 48.

ECC tennis team blanks Clearfield 9-0

The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader tennis team remained undefeated on the young season with a 9-0 victory over the Clearfield Bison squad Thursday afternoon at the Benzinger and Memorial Park courts.
“The weather was nearly perfect for our first home match of the season. Clearfield has a very nice squad. Today they played short-handed, but they played good tennis and it was a nice match to watch,” said ECCHS coach Pete Meier.
At first singles, ECC’s Laira Reuscher defeated Yesh Patel 6-0, 6-0.

Dutchmen open season tonight by hosting Karns City

The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch football team will open their 2012 campaign tonight when they play host to the Karns City Gremlins at 7 p.m. at Dutch Country Stadium.
This will be a Keystone Shortway Athletic Conference (KSAC) Big School contest.
The Dutchmen of coach Joe Schlimm are coming off a 2011 season that saw them finish with a 5-4 regular-season record. They ended their season with a 5-5 mark as they lost to the Clearfield Bison in the District 9-AAA championship contest.

Crusaders open season Saturday afternoon by hosting Smethport

Kickoff slated for 1:30 p.m.
The Elk County Catholic Crusader football team opens their 2012 season Saturday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. when they play host to the Smethport Hubbers at Dutch Country Stadium.
This will be an inter-division contest in the Allegheny Mountain League.
The Crusaders of coach Travis Skrzypek ended their 2011 season with a 6-3 record.
The Crusaders won their first two games of the 2011 season by defeating Cameron County 19-6 and Otto-Eldred 48-0. Elk lost to Coudersport by a 12-7 score before recording wins over Port Allegany 25-19, Johnsonburg 34-0 and Kane 13-6.
