KERSEY â€“ Organizers and volunteers are vigorously preparing for next week's 38th Annual Elk County Fair in Kersey.
With amusement rides provided by Midway Rides of Utica, N.Y., general admission is $6 daily or patrons may purchase advance tickets at the Corner Market & Deli in Kersey. Advanced tickets will be sold for $20 and will give a patron access during all five days of the fair, which runs from Tuesday, Aug. 7 through Saturday, Aug. 11.
A notice was received by Fox Township stating Veolia Environmental has secured a Share Purchase Agreement to sell the solid waste business in the U.S. to Advance Disposal Services (ADS) Waste Holdings. The transaction is subject to regulatory approvals and is expected to close in the fall.
As stated in the July 24 letter, ADS Waste Holdings owns two other companies: Advanced Disposal Services, Inc. based in Jacksonville, Fla.; and Interstate Waste Services, Inc. based in Basking Ridge, N.J.

According to local historian Ray Beimel, the demise of the Pittsburg, Shawmut, and Northern Railroad came about after the physician in the company towns of Force and Byrnedale "drew attention to the terrible conditions of bad water and sewage in the streets."
JOHNSONBURG - The Elk County Tax Collection Committee voted Thursday to approve a resolution effectively ending the county's contract with the Central Tax Bureau (CENTAX) tax collection agency as of the end of the second fiscal quarter.
The announcement comes following ongoing difficulties with CENTAX, including payments and returns unaccounted for and the company failing to distribute collected earned income tax (EIT) monies to local municipalities and school districts.
The Area Transportation Authority's (ATA) celebrated the opening of its new Transit Center by hosting a ribbon cutting and open house on Wednesday. The center is located on the ground floor of the St. Marys Parking Garage on Depot Street.
Margaret A. Eckert, 89, of 131 Wendel Rd., St. Marys, died on Wed., August 1, 2012 at Elk Regional Health Center following a brief illess.
She was born Jan. 31, 1923 in St. Marys, a daughter of the late George and Margaret Geyer Schneider.
On Nov. 27, 1943 in St. Mary's Church, she married the late James G. Eckert, who preceded her in death on March 16, 1993.
Mrs. Eckert was a lifelong resident of St. Marys and was educated in the local schools.Â She was a member of Queen of the World Church.Â She was a dedicated mother, grandmother and homemaker.Â
Frederick C. "Porky" Breindel of Blasdell, N.Y., died Sunday, July 29, 2012.
Mr. Breindel was the son of the late William and Clara Lenze Breindel.
