Michael Proudfit remembered at inaugural 5K walk/run

ST. MARYS - Around 300 people braved the threat of rain on Sunday morning to participate in the the inaugural Michael B. Proudfit Memorial 5K Walk/Run, which began and ended at Memorial Park in St. Marys. The race replaced the Picnic in the Park 5K, which had been held for the past two years.

ERHC revamping 'Q Care' service

ST. MARYS – Elk Regional's acute care service for non-urgent health care needs, called "Q Care," has been restructured with new hours, a new location, and lower costs to better serve area residents.

Grounds quickly turning into Fair

KERSEY – Work continued over the weekend as members of Midway Utica, N.Y. moved their amusement rides in preparation for this week's Elk County Fair.
While patrons will later this week embark on the fairgrounds in Kersey, organizers said work for this year's fair began just a little while after last year's event ended.
"We've been doing our hoagie fundraisers, they do very well, and we've had flea market craft shows that do fairly decent," said Jamie Wolfe, grounds manager. "We have a sign program as well where you pay money to have a sign on the fence at the grounds."

William “Bill” Rio

William “Bill” Rio, 86, of Bennetts Valley Highway in Penfield, died on Saturday, Aug. 4, 2012 at the DuBois Nursing Home following a short illness.
He was born on Nov. 30, 1925 in Tyler, son of the late Giacmo and Anna (Kovalick) Rio.
He married Olga (Kematick) on Aug. 21, 1948. She preceded him in death on March 18, 2009.
Mr. Rio was born and raised in Tyler and lived most of his life in Penfield. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and retired from Rockwell International of DuBois.

Curtis Allen “Cooter” Maholtz

Curtis Allen “Cooter” Maholtz, 60, of Benezette, died Tuesday, July 31, 2012, at home following a short illness.
He was born on March 14, 1952 in DuBois son of the late Chester “Coot” Maholtz and Mabel (Barrett) Maholtz, who survives.
He married Brenda (Gallagher), who survives.
Mr. Maholtz was a graduate of St. Marys Area High School, Class of 1970. He was an equipment operator for coal companies. He lived most of his life in Bennetts Valley. 

John J. Bencic Jr.

John J. Bencic Jr., 54, of Homer City, died at his home surrounded by his family on Saturday, Aug. 4, 2012 after fighting a long battle with cancer.
He was born on March 10, 1958, the son of Helen (Kanick) and the late John J. Bencic Sr. On Sept. 7, 1985, he married Amy Sorg.
John was a graduate of Homer Center High School. He worked for Homer City Coal Processing Corp. for 34 years before his retirement due to illness in January 2012.
