The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch tennis team opened their season Monday by defeating the Brockway Lady Rovers by an 8-1 score at the SMAHS courts.
At first singles, Amy Orr of the Lady Dutch won by a 10-0 score over Taylor Hepler.
Aubrey Wiesner of the Lady Dutch defeated Anna Brinkley by a 10-0 score at second singles.
At first doubles, Brockway’s Taylor Hepler and Taryn Licatovich defeated Danielle McCoy and Emiley Challingsworth by an 8-1 score.
JEFFERSON CO. - New charges have been filed against Francis Anthony Milliard, 54, of Ridgway, in connection with his alleged orchestration of drug sales from Jefferson County Jail, where he is currently incarcerated after being charged with two Elk County arsons and attempted murder in the beating of a Ridgway man.
Milliard was imprisoned on July 24 after being officially charged in arsons committed in Johnsonburg and Ridgway in 2008 and 2012, respectively, as well as attempted homicide and related charges in the June 23, 2011 beating of Todd "TJ" Asti, 44, of Ridgway.
RIDGWAY – At a recent meeting of the Elk County Gas Task Force, Compliance Assistance Specialist Mark F. Harmon of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) Erie office presented a “top 10 list” of the most frequent violations OSHA has encountered recently in the oil and gas industry.
According to Harmon, the following violations are those for which OSHA representatives have issuing the most citations:
1. Guarding floor/wall openings
The Elk County Conservation District [ECCD] will advertise for a new technician position following an approval from the Elk County Commissioners to provide half of the funding.
ECCD Manager Steve Putt and Chairman Russ Braun reported meeting with the commissioners to discuss funding possibilities for a resource conservation technician.
August 26th
Carl C. Winkler, 92, of Force, and recently of St. Joseph Terrace, Weedville, died Friday, Aug. 24, 2012 at the DuBois Nursing Home, DuBois.
He was born Dec. 17, 1919 in Force, son of the late Frank Winkler Sr. and Stella (Gusherowski) Winkler.
On May 3, 1941 he married Shirley Geraldine Smart, who preceded him in death on June 8, 1982.
JOHNSONBURG – A small fire reportedly originated in the basement of an unoccupied house along Main Street in Johnsonburg early Saturday morning. The fire has been ruled an arson, at least the ninth such case reported in Elk County since May 30.
Fire departments were called at 1:52 a.m. Saturday morning, Aug. 25 at 236 Main St. in Johnsonburg. The fire damaged the abandoned residential structure and State Police Fire Marshal Greg Agosti ruled the blaze to be arson.
Damage was reportedly minimal although a dollar estimate is not available at this time. There were no injuries reported.

“I like change a lot,” Raubenstrauch said. “This also gave us the opportunity to help us increase our retail space and separate the Tea House.”
The new layout features the gift shop in the garden conservatory where the Tea House was originally.
August 24th
The PA State Police Fire Marshal and the Ridgway Fire Department report investigating the origin and cause of a fire that occurred at 10:02 a.m. on Aug. 24, 2012 at a farm located at 753 Kemmer Rd. and owned by Lynn Wright of Kersey. According to police, the fire damaged a silo and several round bales of hay. The cause of the fire was determined to be accidental in nature. Damage was estimated at $4,700. There were no injuries. The Fox Township Fire Department assisted at the scene.
JAY TWP. - According to the Jay Township Board of Supervisors, the municipality and its taxpayers are footing increasingly large bills for communications made by Marcellus Shale companies utilizing the PA One Call (PAOC) system.
According to the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC), the function of the PAOC is to prevent damage to underground facilities by informing excavators, contractors, plumbers, builders, designers, and the general public of where underground lines are located before any projects in which earth will be disturbed commence.
