Crusader golfers edge Ridgway for D9-AA team title

It was a cool and breezy fall day Monday at the Bavarian Hills Golf Course, but for the Elk County Catholic Crusader golf team, the weather and everything else was just about perfect as the Crusaders edged the Ridgway Elkers 335-336 to claim the District 9 Class AA team title.
Elk Catholic's foursome consisted of Elliott Struble, Mitchell Struble, Drew Meyer, and Jess Jaynes. The D9 team title is the first for second-year Crusader head coach George Schneider.

Lady Elker soccer edges Lady Dutch 1-0

The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch soccer team lost a tough 1-0 contest to the Ridgway Lady Elkers Monday afternoon at the SMAHS soccer field.
The lone goal of the game came at the 30:34 mark of the first half when Ridgway’s Abbie Lampman scored from the left side, giving Ridgway the eventual only goal of the contest.
Ridgway dominated play in the first half as they kept the ball in the St. Marys half of the field. The Lady Elkers had seven shots on goal to St. Marys’ one. They also had seven corner kicks in the first 40 minutes of play.

Aiello sentenced for camp burglaries

RIDGWAY - A St. Marys man convicted of 189 counts of burglary and related charges stemming from a multitude of burglaries committed at camps throughout Elk, McKean, and Cameron counties was sentenced Monday in Elk County Court to serve no less than 11 years, 3 months and no more than 30 years in state prison.

Country Club closes after filing for bankruptcy

According to court documents filed on March 12, 2012, St. Marys Country Club President James R. Slay filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and the club closed on Aug. 31.
The voluntary petition was filed with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court, Western District of Pennsylvania, and listed Slay as the debtor. According to the petition, the club is a tax-exempt organization under the Internal Revenue Code and has both estimated assets and liabilities between $500,000 and $1 million.

Caruso coaching people to be their best

Area business owner and entrepreneur Peggy Caruso wants to help others achieve their own business and personal goals, and has recently hung out her shingle as a life coach to assist area residents in forging that path.
Caruso said the idea of a life coach may be foreign in this neck of the woods, but was quick to explain that it is not therapy and many people who have already reached major milestones, such as top executives, use it to target what they want to do and where they want to go as they continue on their journey through life.

Ina F. "Babe" Stonik

Ina F. "Babe" Stonik, 91, of Christ the King Manor in DuBois and formerly of Medix Run, died peacefully on Sunday, Sept. 23, 2012 at Christ the King Manor.
She was born Jan. 24, 1921 in Medix Run, daughter of the late Gustave and Elva (Higgins) Snyder. She married Bernard John Stonik on March 15, 1941. He died on Nov. 4, 2004.
Ina lived most of her life in Medix Run, Nelson's Golden Years and Christ the King Manor. She was a homemaker, loving mother, artist and early environmentalist. She enjoyed reading, was a great cat lover and was a lifetime member of the Society of Henry Wolcott.

William (Gussie) Gusmerotti

William (Gussie) Gusmerotti, 63, of Ridgway, died Friday night, September 21, 2012 at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh following a brief illness.
William was born Feb. 17, 1949 in DuBois, the son of the late Isaac and Maria (Bleggi) Gusmerotti.  
William worked at Weyerhaeuser in Ridgway and Keystone Carbon in St. Marys. He also was employed many years at Ridgway Dry Cleaner. He was an active member of the Ridgway Moose Club.
