Elk County Youth Field Day set for Saturday, Sept. 15

The 19th annual Elk County Youth Field Day is being held at the St. Marys Sportsmen’s Club on Sept. 15 for all youths, ages 10 to 14. There at least five donated prints being awarded with three of the prints pictured above. Opportunities to win are available from any committee member, as well as various places in the county.
There will be an Elk County Youth Field Day meeting tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the St. Marys Sportsmen’s Club.
Anyone interested in helping is asked to attend.

Lightning gives Crusaders 2-1 win over Curwensville

FOX TWP. – It was a dark and stormy night at Angela Huey Memorial Field in Fox Township on Tuesday for the Elk County Catholic High School boys' soccer team's match against Curwensville. The Crusaders were able to make the best of things, though, as they held on to a 2-1 advantage until the game was called almost midway through the second half due to lightning.

Dutch soccer drops opener 6-1 to Brockway

The St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen soccer team suffered a minor setback in their season opener as they were defeated 6-1 by a very good Brockway squad on Tuesday afternoon at St. Marys Area High School's soccer field.
Faced with the threat of rain throughout the match and a nonfunctioning scoreboard, the Dutchmen still managed to hold Brockway to a 2-1 lead at the end of the first half, but then the Rovers added four more unanswered goals throughout the second half to take the 6-1 win.

Bradford volleyball squad downs Lady Crusaders 3-0

The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader volleyball team lost their home opener to the Bradford Lady Owls by a 3-0 score Tuesday evening at the ECCHS gym.
Bradford won the first set by a 25-13 margin. They took the second set 25-23 and won the third set 25-21 to win the match.
“Bradford has a very nice team,” said ECCHS coach Diane Gies. “We didn’t play our best tonight, but we learned a lot about ourselves. Right now we’re on a learning curve because we have a lot of growing pains.”
The Lady Crusaders opened their season on Saturday by winning the Union Tournament.

Curwensville Tide swamps Lady Crusaders 5-0

ST. MARYS - The Curwensville Golden Lady Tide girls' varsity soccer team started the 2012 season the same way they ended the 2011 schedule-- showing that they will be one of the top teams in the area.
On Tuesday afternoon, Curwensville defeated the Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders 5-0 at Benzinger Park.
"That is one of the best teams we will play all year," said ECC coach Don Fabiano following the contest about the Tide. "Curwensville has few weak spots."

Dick Prout died at his brother Jack and sister-in-law DiAnn’s home outside Buffalo, New York on Sept. 2, 2012. Dick is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 69 years, Ethel Stewart Prout. Dick was the father of Larry Prout (Jean) and Lee Prout (Linda); and grandfather of Brian Prout, Lisa Prout Williams (Kyle), Jennifer Prout and the late Jeffrey Prout. He was the older brother of the late Gordon Prout (late Darleen), Carol Mesler (late Fredrick), and Jack Prout (DiAnn).

Martha E. Frank, 86, formerly of Austin, Pa., died Monday, Sept. 3, 2012 at Sweden Valley Manor in Coudersport.
Born on Oct. 9, 1925 in Brockway, she was the daughter of James and Effie Fuhs Whelan. On Nov. 23, 1945 in Brockway, she married Vincent J. Frank, who died on April 8, 2003.
Mrs. Frank graduated from high school in Brockway. She was a longtime resident of Austin and worked for many years at Roy’s General Store. She was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church, where she served as a Eucharistic minister. She had a strong faith and was loved by all who knew her.

'Ride for a Dream' equine dice run pairs up with Make-A-Wish

ST. MARYS - Organizers of the "Ride for a Dream" Equine Dice Run are hoping for a large turnout for their event taking place Saturday, Sept. 15 at the St. Marys Campowners located on Airport Road.
An auction, cash drawing, spaghetti dinner, pony rides, balloon launch and DJ are among the scheduled activities for the day.
Proceeds from the event will benefit Make-A-Wish of Greater Pennsylvania and Southern West Virginia.

Fugitive Smith turns himself in

EMPORIUM – Fugitive Thomas Edward Smith, 58, of Emporium, wanted for the attempted abduction of a female bank executive, turned himself in to authorities Monday night, according to police.
The Emporium Borough Police Department reports that at approximately 8:10 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 3, they received a tip from a concerned citizen that fugitive Thomas Edward Smith, 58, of Emporium, had just entered the Allegany Pub, 500 E. Allegany Ave., Emporium. Emporium Borough Police and Emporium-based Pa. State Police surrounded the establishment.
