JOHNSONBURG BORO - A Johnsonburg man is facing drug charges after authorities, in raiding his home, uncovered what is being called a "sophisticated and substantial" marijuana-growing operation at the residence.
According to affidavits, Troopers with the Pennsylvania State Police Troop C Vice Unit were notified of the existence of a marijuana-growing operation at the 433 Second Ave. home of Edward Joseph Pisani, 54, by a phone call from an unidentified source on Sept. 4.
Area residents are encouraged to participate in the American Cancer Society Cancer Prevention Study-3, a nationwide study being conducted in St. Marys on Sept. 11 and 12 at the Sacred Heart Parish Center on Center Street.
ST. MARYS - During the workshop meeting of the St. Marys Area School District Board of Directors on Thursday, board members discussed the district filing an appeal with the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) following receipt of a warning status due to the graduation rate for economically disadvantaged students. The previous appeal was denied.
The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader volleyball team evened their record at 1-1 on the season with a 3-0 victory over the St. Marys Area Lady Dutch Thursday night at the SMAHS “Dutch Oven”. The Lady Dutch are now 0-2 on the year.
The Lady Crusaders won the first set by a 25-14 score. They took the second set 25-23 and won the third set 25-20 to win the match.
The Elk Catholic Lady Crusader tennis team picked up an 8-1 win over St. Marys Area on Thursday afternoon in matches played at Benzinger and Memorial parks.
"Everyone at today's match witnessed some great tennis between two very good tennis teams. The weather was nice, the singles matches were well played, and it was another really good day for District 9 tennis. St. Marys is a nice team and they played very well today," said ECC coach Pete Meier.
Elk Catholic's lone loss of the day came at first singles as St. Marys Area's Amy Orr defeated Laira Reuscher 6-1, 7-5.
The Elk County Catholic High School gold team remained undefeated with a 199-268 win over Kane on Wednesday afternoon at Bavarian Hills Golf Course in St. Marys.
Elliott Struble was the medalist of the day with a two-over-par round of 37.
The low scorer for Kane was Jamie Rook with a 45.
Drew Meyer shot a 39 for the Crusaders, Jess Jaynes recorded a 40, Bruno Cavalline had a 41, and Brandon Schlimm finished with a 42.
Also for the Crusaders, Mitchell Struble had a 43, Kristy Hanes shot a 47, and Garrett Reuscher recorded a 52.
