For the second time, the Ridgway community has once again been chosen to be featured on "Our Town" on WPSU public television.
The broadcast will air tonight, Thursday, Sept. 13, at 8 p.m. on channel 3 and online at www.wpsu.org.
JOHNSONBURG - A Johnsonburg man wanted by police and considered armed and dangerous after fleeing the scene of a domestic dispute on Aug. 16 in which he allegedly threatened the victim's life and his own while brandishing a shotgun, waived his preliminary hearing in District Court on Wednesday.
According to an affidavit, Justin F. Latcovich, 26, of Ridgway, has been charged with aggravated assault with a firearm, making terroristic threats, and simple assault following a domestic disturbance at his Center Street home on Aug. 16.
Dolores L. Cuneo, 81, of Madison Street, Byrnedale, died Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2012 at Pinecrest Manor in St. Marys.
She was born Aug. 16, 1931 in Byrnedale, daughter of the late John and Mary (Darui) DeCarli.
On Aug. 7, 1971, she married Wayne E. Cuneo of Byrnedale, who survives.
Dolores lived all her life in her family home in Byrnedale. She graduated as the valedictorian of Bennetts Valley High School, Class of 1949, and retired from Stackpole Carbon of St. Marys in 1977 after 28 years.
Donald Gruesu died on July 20, 2012 in Carlsbad, Calif.
He was born on Aug. 17, 1964, in Ridgway, the middle son of Joseph and Bernice Gruesu, who survive. He married Patty Dwyer on Oct. 4, 1997 in Newport Beach, Calif.; she survives.
In addition to his wife and parents, he is survived by three sons, Brandon and twins Bayard and Carson; a daughter, Mallorie; a granddaughter, Brooke; and two brothers, Stephen Gruesu and Paul Gruesu.
Elaine I. White, 84, of Weedville and recently of Christ the King Manor of DuBois, died late Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2012 at the Christ the King Manor.
She was born July 6, 1928 in Weedville, daughter of the late George and Frieda (Smith) Martin. She married Raymond Levendusky, who preceded her in death in 1968; and George O. White, who preceded her in death in 1978.
Elaine lived most of her life in Bennetts Valley and recently DuBois, and attended Bennetts Valley schools.
She was a homemaker.
The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader tennis team remained undefeated with a 9-0 win over Johnsonburg on Tuesday afternoon in contests played at Benzinger and Memorial parks.
"Today was a near-perfect day for a tennis match against a very nice and greatly improved Johnsonburg squad," said ECC coach Pete Meier. "Both teams played very well and the fans were treated to some very good tennis. It's always fun playing Johnsonburg. They are well-coached, they have nice girls, and they play good tennis."
At first singles, ECC's Laira Reuscher defeated Riley Fannin 6-0, 6-0.
The Elk County Catholic cross country teams opened their home season Tuesday by playing host to the Brookville squads.
The Crusaders defeated the Raiders 25-30, while the Lady Raiders did not have enough runners to field a team.
In the girls' race, ECC's Kennedy Weisner placed first with a time of 20:08, followed by her teammate, Victoria Dippold, in second in 21:07.
Ridgway's Rachel Guyer placed third in 22:02, followed by Johnsonburg's Kathryn Polaski, who was fourth in 22:32.
The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader volleyball team raised their dual match record to 3-0 on the season with a 3-0 victory over the Kane Lady Wolves Tuesday night at the ECCHS gym.
Elk Catholic won the first set by a 25-20 score. They took the second set 25-17 and won the third set by a 25-12 score.
â€śThat was a very good win against a quality Kane team,â€ť said ECCHS coach Diane Gies. â€śI think our best game was our third game tonight. Our blocking at the net was outstanding.â€ť
â€śNow is the time to take the next step and maintain what weâ€™re doing,â€ť she added.
The St. Marys Area Board of Directors discussed the assessment exam results for last school year, areas needing improvement and those in which the district is at or above target.
SMASD Superintendent Ann Kearney began with enrollment in the district, which she said is the "first thing you want to know about when you start a school year."
Although kindergarten enrollment is up in the district, overall enrollment is down to its lowest numbers since the 2003-2004 school year, decreasing from 2,541 to 2,235 this year.
RIDGWAY - At Tuesdayâ€™s meeting of the Elk County Gas Task Force, task force chair and Elk County Commissioner June H. Sorg commended the group for continuing to meet even though Marcellus Shale activity has slowed in the area and said the group will be well-prepared as a result when activity ramps up again.
