The Elk County Catholic Crusader varsity basketball squad ended their regular season with a 45-40 victory over the visiting Bradford Owls on Wednesday evening in a contest played at the Elk County Catholic High School gymnasium.
The Owls led for much of the contest, holding a 10-9 advantage at the end of the first quarter, a 23-16 lead at the half, and were on top 33-30 at the end of the third quarter. The Crusaders outscored Bradford 15-7 in the fourth quarter to claim the victory.
JOHNSONBURG – Johnsonburg girls basketball used timely baskets and strong interior play for a 31-27 victory over St. Marys Wednesday night at Johnsonburg Area High School.
The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch basketball team closed out their season with a 58-48 loss to the Johnsonburg Rams last night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.
The Rams were able to outscore the Dutchmen by a 20-7 margin in the second quarter to open a 32-17 halftime lead. In the second half, St. Marys outscored Johnsonburg by a 31-25 margin.
St. Marys Area School District superintendent Ann Kearney at Monday's meeting of the board of directors presented a utility cost and usage report, detailing the district's energy costs and consumption in each of its school buildings over the past three years.
Those who watched the television show "The Voice" on Monday evening may be familiar with Pip, the clean-cut young man wearing the suspenders and bow tie who wowed all four of the judges with his rendition of "House of the Rising Sun."
Kathleen V. Frank, 93, of Water Street, Johnsonburg, and recently of Kane, died Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2012 at the Lutheran Home of Kane following a short illness. She was born May 6, 1918 in Johnsonburg, daughter of the late John and Emma Amacher Lynch. On Jan. 28, 1936, she married Frederick C. Frank, who preceded her in death Aug. 3, 1991.
She lived all her life on Water Street, Johnsonburg, until the past several years in Kane.
James M. Fitzgerald, 60, of 105 E. Condot Rd., St. Marys, died at his home on Monday, Feb. 13, 2012, surrounded by his family.
He was born June 15, 1951 in Bradford, a son of William and Shirley Hokanson Fitzgerald of St. Marys.
On Sept. 2, 1972 in Johnsonburg, he married Barbara Williams Fitzgerald, who survives.

HYDE - Swimming may seem like a sport of individual efforts, but that wasn’t the case when the St. Marys Area High School swim and dive team met the Clearfield Bisons on Monday night in Clearfield. The Dutchmen made a bold statement at the Robert L. Shearer Natatorium when they captured all three relays in a dramatic fashion in the hopes of keeping their undefeated season alive.
The Dutchmen defeated the Bisons 114--72, while the Lady Bisons downed the Lady Dutch 123-63.
ST. MARYS - A resolution to include Ridgway Area School District in a pre-existing athletic co-operative between St. Marys Area School District and Elk County Catholic High School was the subject of much discussion at Monday night's meeting of the SMASD Board of Directors. Terry Straub, student activities director for SMASD, said the issue involves the modification of the current co-operative between SMASD and ECC for the sports of swimming and diving to also include the Ridgway Area School District.
A captivating night of horse racing awaits those planning to attend the St. Marys Area Chamber of Commerce's Annual Dinner, taking place Saturday, Feb. 25 at the Red Fern.
"We have a lot of fun and exciting things planned for this year's dinner and we hope to see everyone there," said Ashley O'Dell, Chamber community outreach coordinator.
As part of The Chamber Derby, gates will open at 5:30 p.m., with cocktails being served from 5:30-6:30 p.m. and dinner taking place at 6:45 p.m. Diners may choose from entrees of chicken, prime rib or shrimp.
