Business Expo to showcase array of vendors

With over 40 vendors slated to attend the 2012 Business Expo, organizers are encouraging the public to stop out at the event taking place Saturday, Feb. 18 at the Red Fern in St. Marys from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
There will be representatives of businesses including contractors, energy representatives, educational, home-based businesses, manufacturing, insurance and healthcare, along with many more.
Together, The River 98.9 radio station and the St. Marys Area Chamber of Commerce have paired up to sponsor the event as in years past.

Block grants and Corbett's budget discussed at SMASD workshop meeting

St. Marys Area School District Superintendent Anne Kearney discussed the 2012-2013 state budget released by Pa. Governor Tom Corbett this past week at Thursday's meeting of the SMASD Board of Directors. Kearney identified changes and non-changes to public education funding as represented in the budget and how it all relates to public school districts and SMASD in particular.
According to the Pennsylvania School Board Association (PSBA), this marks the second consecutive year that public schools in Pennsylvania have been faced with cuts in state funding.

Valentine's Day Ball held for Pinecrest residents

For about an hour and a half on Saturday afternoon, the sounds of upbeat tunes could be heard at Pinecrest as around 70 residents gathered for the annual Valentine's Day Ball.
The event is held each year by St. Marys Area High School and Elk County Catholic High School students in the Confirmation classes at Queen of the World Parish, Sacred Heart Parish, and St. Mary's Parish. This year 20 students participated in the event, according to Kathy Reuscher, confirmation facilitator.

Kane cosmetologist to help cancer patients

A Kane cosmetologist is volunteering to help local cancer patients through a national public service program known as “Look Good…Feel Better.”
Becky Gallagher Vogel, who operates Becky’s Boutique at 439 Biddle St., Kane, will conduct the first local workshop Tuesday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. for female cancer patients.
The free Valentine’s Day forum will be held in a conference room on the second floor of Kane Community Hospital, an affiliate of Hamot/UPMC.

Emma Irene Wallace

Emma Irene Wallace, 99, of Mill Run Road, Penfield, died Saturday, Feb. 11, 2012.
She was born Dec. 29, 1912 in Akron, Ohio, daughter of the late Frank Boughner and Laura (Pressler) Plyler. She married Dorsey S. Wallace, who preceded her in death in 1970.
Mrs. Wallace lived in Ohio until coming to the area in 1937, remaining the rest of her life in Mill Run. 
She was a homemaker. She also worked five years with Stackpole Carbon. She was Methodist by faith and a member of the Gold Star Wives of America. She enjoyed crocheting and crossword puzzles and her life was devoted to her family.

Ned J. Kopp

Ned J. Kopp, 80, of 313 Welsh St., Kane, formerly of St. Marys, died Saturday, Feb. 11, 2012 at the Kane Community Hospital.
Born Dec. 14, 1931 in St. Marys, he was the son of the late William C. and Caroline E. Weber Kopp. On June 6, 1964 in Emporium, he married Marilyn M. Haviland, who died July 4, 2011.
Ned was a mechanic for Airco Speer in St. Marys for many years. He served in the U.S. Army after WWII and during the Korean War, and was part of the St. Marys Serviceman's Detail.

Patricia L. Cook

Patricia L. Cook, 89, of 223 Irving Ave., Ridgway, died Friday, Feb. 10, 2012, at Pinecrest Manor.
She was born Aug. 17, 1922, in Ridgway, the daughter of Everett and Phyllis Shugars Carberry. She married Lawrence K. Cook; he predeceased her on Aug. 29, 1994.
Mrs. Cook resided in Ridgway most of her life, where she was a member of St. Leo’s Catholic Church. She enjoyed her tea time with friends and being with her family. She had been employed at Sylvania in St. Marys.

Crusaders down Dutch 52-35 in D9 League play

The Elk County Catholic Crusaders used a big second quarter to hand the St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen a 52-35 District 9 League loss last night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.
Elk held an 11-10 lead after the first quarter. They scored the first 11 points of the second quarter to open a 23-10 lead with 2:13 left in the half. They led 26-14 at the half. The Crusaders outscored the Dutch 26-21 in the second half.

LaRouche Movement makes stop in St. Marys

On Friday two men representing the LaRouche Movement and political action committee (PAC) stood outside the Post Office in St. Marys beside a table strewn with literature and signage expressing disapproval of President Barack Obama's foreign and domestic policies, as well as depictions of the Commander-in-Chief with a toothbrush mustache as worn by Adolph Hitler.
The two men, Tony Esposito and Joe Billington, both of Upper Darby, Pa., attempted to engage passersby on the subject of politics and the current president.

Virgil Silvio Foradori

Virgil Silvio Foradori, 80, of McCracken Run Road, DuBois, PA died Thursday, Feb. 9, 2012 at U.P.M.C. St. Margaret Medical Center, Pittsburgh.
He was born Sept. 21, 1931, the son of the late Alexander and Frances (Coder) Foradori.
On Aug. 18, 1956, at St. Boniface Catholic Church, he married Beverly Ann Krise, who preceded him in death on April 26, 2010.
He was employed by Brockway Glass Company as a mold maker. He was supervisor of the mold shop at Brockway’s plant 17 (Danville, Va.) and plant 2 (Crenshaw).
