November 27th
Henry C. Friedl, 81, of Jersey Hollow Rd. in Little Valley, N.Y. ,died peacefully on Monday, Nov. 26, 2012.
He was born Sept. 29, 1931 in St. Marys, the son of the late Charles and Bertha (Wonderly) Friedl. He married Bonnie Hart-Friedl, who survives.
He was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Air Force from 1951-1953. He worked as an over-the-road truck driver. He was an avid outdoorsman and a member of the Little Valley American Legion.
Vilmer W. Buchheit, 96, of 586 Fillmore Rd., St. Marys, died unexpectedly Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2012 at the family hunting camp in South Kersey.
He was born Feb. 21, 1916, in St. Marys, son of the late Charles and Germaine Goetz Buchheit. In 1939, in St. Mary's Church, he married Frances A. Herzing, who preceded him in death in 1976.
He was a lifelong resident of the area and attended St. Marys schools. He was a retired employee of the Keystone Carbon Co., retiring in 1980 after 43 years of service.
November 26th
Agnes M. Auman, 92, a resident of Pinecrest Manor and formerly of Elk Towers and a former resident of Ridgway, died Monday, Nov. 26 at Pinecrest Manor after a brief illness.
She was born July 23, 1920, in St. Marys, daughter of the late Simon and Frances Fruehstorfer Schafman. On Oct. 25, 1941, in the St. Joseph Monastery, she married Eugene G. Auman, who preceded her in death on Aug. 26, 1983.
Editor's Note: Throughout the next two months, the various community agencies that receive funding under the St. Marys Area United Way will be highlighted. The organization's fundraising campaign concludes on Dec. 15.

They do some remarkable things, so we're very lucky," said Lindie Gnan, manager, membership and community development for the Girl Scouts of Western Pennsylvania in discussing how funding from the St. Marys Area United Way benefits the St. Marys Area Girl Scout Neighborhood.
Elk County is now home to one of two drilling rigs converted from diesel to cleaner-burning liquified natural gas by Seneca Resources Corporation for use in its Marcellus Shale operations here. According to a press release from the National Fuel Gas Company, for which Seneca functions as an exploration and production subsidiary, the first rig powered by 100 percent liquified natural gas (LNG) was converted and integrated into Seneca operations in Lycoming County. The company is reportedly proceeding with plans to put a third rig built to run on both diesel and natural gas into use.
"Listen to your teachers." "Study." "Be self-aware." "Be accountable." "Do not ever let anyone tell you 'no.'" This advice was given to students at Elk County Catholic High School during a recent academic assembly by guest speaker Dr. Micah Hoffman. Dr. Hoffman is a 2003 Summa Cum Laude graduate of ECC, and is currently a psychiatrist at the Jane and Terry Semel Institute for Neuroscience at the Stewart and Lynda Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital at the Ronald Reagan Medical Center of the University of California, Los Angeles Health System.

The Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) Pennsylvania State Leadership Workshop was held Nov. 4-5 at the Penn Stater Conference Center Hotel in State College and the four officers and co-advisors from Elk County Catholic High School's newly formed chapter were among the roughly 850 participants at the event, which consisted of FBLA chapters from all over the state.
The 2013 Elk County Relay for Life will begin on a Saturday instead of a Friday this year to give more area residents an opportunity to participate. According to Public Relations Chair Barbie Simbeck, the Relay for Life Committee and teams voted to have the event begin on Saturday, June 8 at 9 a.m. and end on Sunday, June 9 at 9 a.m. The event will still be held at the Fox Township Community Park.
