Elkland Search and Rescue evolving, expanding as life-saving outfit

You may not always see them in action, but the members of Elkland Search and Rescue provide vital emergency services in Elk and neighboring counties and across the state.
"We actually are the only Pennsylvania-certified search and rescue team in northwestern Pennsylvania," said Matt Young, current president and deputy chief of Elkland Search and Rescue. "We essentially have from where we are all the way over to Ohio and from Interstate 80 all the way up to New York, is pretty much our coverage area."

Fox supervisors address tax, seismic testing

The Fox Township Supervisors approved a motion to adopt a resolution to allow the township to collect their portion of the Occupational Privilege Tax. Currently all of the tax goes directly to the St. Marys Area School District.
"We're allowed to collect this tax," said Supervisor Mike Keller.
The township has until May to put it in their books for collection next year. This also requires a three week advertising period.
In addition Elexco Land Services will be conducting seismic testing throughout the township.
The company wants to bond all township roads to conduct the testing.

Lady Dutch swimmers avenge early-season loss

SMA squads sweep Bradford teams

ST. MARYS - It was a sweet victory for the St. Marys Area Lady Dutch swim team when they avenged an early-season two-point loss to the Bradford girls by a commanding 38 points on Thursday night at the SMAHS Natatorium. The SMA girls won the meet 109-71 after gaining momentum in the diving portion of the meet and finishing out the meet strong. The Dutchmen outscored the Owls 122-48, keeping their perfect season alive, while the Lady Dutch are now 4-3 for the season with two meets left in the regular season.

Harry J. Wolf

Harry J. Wolf, 84, of 401 Valley View Dr., Ridgway, died Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2012, at the DuBois Nursing Home.
He was born Sept. 28, 1927, in St. Marys, son of the late Herman and Ruth (Miller) Wolf. He married Rose Winters on July 14, 1978, and she survives.

Eileen Weaver-King

Eileen Weaver-King, 70, of Crescent, died Sunday, Jan. 29, 2012, in Allegheny General Hospital.
She was born on Aug. 11, 1941 in Oswaldtwistle, England.
She worked as a nurse, working with the Royal Air Force in England. She also had her own desktop publishing business and was also an administrator for a care facility. She was very active in the Lion's Club.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, William E. Weaver, in 2002; and by her second husband John King III, also in 2002.

SMASD principals give reports on second quarter

Thursday's workshop meeting of the St. Marys Area School District's Board of Directors included presentations from school principals on quarter two of the 2011-2012 school year and preparations being made for the upcoming quarter and Pennsylvania System of School Assessment tests in March.
St. Marys Area High School principal Josh Williams said significant progress in terms of discipline has been made in comparing second quarters of the previous three years, adding that there is still some work to be done on the academic front.

Budget reform, economic growth important to Thompson

U.S. Congressman Glenn 'GT' Thompson, R-Howard, recently outlined his legislative priorities for 2012 as the 112th Congress .
“We start 2012 with momentum. On Dec. 31, 2011, President Barack Obama signed into law a bill I introduced this year, the 'Service Members Telemedicine and E-Health Portability Act,' or 'STEP Act,' which will expand mental and health care access to our nation’s service members," Thompson said.

Chamber Door Busters aimed at growing memberships

In an effort to attract individual members to the organization as well as promoting area businesses and their products, the St. Marys Area Chamber of Commerce is launching Chamber Door Buster days beginning today.
"In the past the Chamber has offered member-to-member discounts, but we've never focused on individual discounts," explained St. Marys Area Chamber of Commerce Community Outreach Coordinator Ashley O'Dell. "While we still have great benefits for our business members, this year's membership is focused on individuals and what we can do for them."

Paterno involved in more than just football

My reflections of Joe Paterno go back to Sept. 26, 1978, when I attended a luncheon in State College at Gatsby's Restaurant. Joe Paterno was in attendance; President Gerald Ford; George H.W. Bush was the national Republican chairman; Governor Dick Thornburgh; Lt. Gov. Bill Scranton; Congressman Bill Clinger were all in attendance at the luncheon. Speakers for this luncheon were President Ford, Congressman Clinger and Joe Paterno.

As Valentine's Day draws near, florists have stocked their shops with the flowers and bouquets that will commemorate the holiday for many couples. While purchasing that floral token of affection is as easy as walking into your local flower shop, local florists explain it is a more complicated task than one might think in their preparing for the holiday and getting those flowers to you.
As local florists explained the flowers gifted this Valentine's Day are almost exclusively imported from countries like Canada and Colombia or shipped in from states like California.
