Library hosts writers' contest kickoff

On Saturday morning WPSU visited the St. Marys Public Library to kick off the PBS KIDS GO! Writers Contest, geared toward kindergarten through third grade students.
"It’s a national initiative designed to promote the advancement of children’s reading skills through hands-on, active learning," said Bianca Barr, Penn State Outreach Marketing and Communications.
Penn State Public Broadcasting has partnered with WQED in Pittsburgh and West Virginia Public Broadcasting to offer this contest to children across Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

Mary R. (Mae) Sorg

Mary R. (Mae) Sorg, 93, of 412 Brusselles St., St. Marys, died Friday, Feb. 3, 2012 at Elk Regional Health Center following a brief illness.
She was born on Aug. 20, 1918 in St. Marys, daughter of the late Joseph and Gertrude Schreiber Hammer.
On Dec. 27, 1950 in St. Benedict's Church in Daguschonda, she married Francis Xavier (Frank) Sorg, and he preceded her in death on Dec. 29, 1979.
She was a lifelong resident of the area and was a graduate of Central Catholic High School, Class of 1937. She had been employed by the Stackpole Carbon Co. in the accounting office until her marriage.

Darcy L. Allegretto

Darcy L. Allegretto, 54, of 6989 Glen Hazel Rd., Wilcox, died Friday night, Feb. 3, 2012 at her residence following an illness of one year.
She was born on June 29,1957 in Ridgway, daughter of the late Richard "Bill" and Lucille Winters Silcosky.
On July 15, 1989, she married Lawrence "Larry" Allegretto, and he survives.
Formerly of Johnsonburg, she resided in Glen Hazel since 1985. She graduated from Johnsonburg High School in 1975.
She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church of Johnsonburg. She enjoyed cooking and baking. She also loved to be outside doing planting and yardwork.

Brian L. Erich

Brian L. Erich, 44, of 133 Wehler Rd., St. Marys, died on Saturday, Feb. 4, 2012 at Elk Haven Nursing Home following a lengthy illness.
He was born Aug. 6, 1967 in St. Marys, a son of John "Jack" Erich, St. Marys, and the late Jean M. Vollmer Erich, who preceded him in death on April 16, 2010.
Brian was a lifelong resident of the area and a graduate of SMAHS, Class of 1985. He was employed at Metaldyne for more than 25 years. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting and trapping. He also enjoyed planting outdoor food plots and shooting sporting clays. 

Sally “Marcella” Wheaton

Sally “Marcella” Wheaton, 60, of 3600 Festor Dr., Hermitage, died at her residence on Saturday, Feb. 4, 2012 after an extended illness.
She was born in St. Marys, daughter of the late Gilbert J. Krug and Martha (Detsch) Krug.  She married Dale Wheaton on Aug. 17, 1951, and he survives.  
Sally worked as a physician’s assistant with Sharon Regional Health Services and she attended St. John’s Episcopal Church. She loved crafting, especially needlepoint, and she also enjoyed golfing with her husband.

Crusaders hold off Punxsy Chucks for 47-45 win

Clayton Housler converted a one-and-one situation with 2.8 seconds remaining and Ben Wortman blocked a Punxsutawney shot at the buzzer to give the Elk County Catholic Crusaders a 47-45 District 9 League victory over the Punxsutawney Chucks last night at the ECCHS gym.

DuBois uses late run to down Dutchmen 49-38

The St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen basketball squad was unable to keep their momentum going after rallying from a 13-point deficit early in the third quarter to take a 31-29 lead with just over three minutes in the period. Their lead was short-lived, though, as the DuBois Beavers staged a rally of their own and pulled away to take a 49-38 victory on Friday evening at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.

SMA swim teams sweep Brookville squads Thursday

ST. MARYS - Both squads of the St. Marys Area swim and dive teams scored big victories on Thursday night at the Dutch Natatorium over the visiting Brookville Raiders. The Lady Dutch outscored the Lady Raiders 131-32 while the Dutchmen won their meet by a 122-31 margin.

Phil says six more weeks of winter

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Gov. Tom Corbett professed his early spring preferences just prior to Punxsutawney Phil's 126th annual prognostication early Thursday morning at Gobbler's Knob, but as history has shown, the Seer of Seer relies on nothing else except than his own instinct.
The result, as read by Vice President Mike Johnston: "As I look at the crowd of Gobbler's Knob, many shadows do I see; so six more weeks of winter it must be."
When asked if he was pleased with Punxsy Phil's prognostication, Corbett replied, "No. Now we've got to get PennDOT ready."

Authority discusses business matters

Veolia Greentree Landfill Manager Don Heinrichs was not able to attend Tuesday's meeting of the Elk County Solid Waste Authority, but Elk County Recycling/Solid Waste Coordinator Bekki Titchner provided a report on his behalf.
