SMA swim teams split with Clearfield squads Monday

ST. MARYS – It was a classic “duel in the pool” on Monday night when the St. Marys Swim and Dive Team met the Clearfield Bisons head-on at the SMAHS Natatorium. The District 9 drama took many twists and turns, ending in the Dutchmen outlasting the Bisons 105-80 to improve to 3-0 on the season. The Lady Dutch gave it their all but were beaten by the Lady Bisons 124-62, dropping to a 1-2 record.

Lady Dutch earn road victory over Ridgway, 74-32

The St. Marys Lady Dutch used strong perimeter shooting and a fast start to take a 74-32 victory over Ridgway Monday night at Ridgway Area High School.
St. Marys made nine 3-pointers on the game. St. Marys coach Leona Hoohuli said the perimeter game is something the Lady Dutch can rely upon.
"What we're looking for is to move the basketball and we'll get our shot and we'll make our shot," Hoohuli said. "We were looking to just move the basketball around and they were able to connect on their shot."

Crusaders record 49-39 AML win over Kane Wolves

The Elk County Catholic Crusaders raised their Allegheny Mountain League North Division record to 3-1 with a 49-39 victory over the Kane Wolves Monday night at the ECCHS gym.
The game was tied at 12 all after the first eight minutes of play with Elk outscoring Kane 14-12 in the second quarter for a 26-24 halftime lead. The Crusaders outscored the Wolves 23-15 in the second half to win the game.
“It was a good win. Kane played us really hard,” said ECCHS coach Aaron Straub.
“I thought we played hard, really scrappy, got on the floor and hustled,” said the coach.

Housing expo catering to renters and homeowners

From renters to new buyers to long-time homeowners, the 2012 Local Housing Options Team (LHOT) Housing Expo provides one-stop shopping for an array of services ranging from maintaining a residence or remodeling to financing and insurance.
The free event is taking place Thursday, Feb. 2 from 12-5 p.m. at The Edgewood building, located on the Million Dollar Highway behind the Subway restaurant in St. Marys.

Drilling company may face settlement agreement

RIDGWAY - Elk County Waterways Conservation Officer Thomas McMann of the Pa. Fish and Boat Commission attended Monday night's Elk County Conservation District [ECCD] meeting to report on a bentonite spill that occurred along Silver Creek near Johnsonburg in November 2011.
On Nov. 15, the Hunt Marcellus Operating Company spilled a large amount of bentonite into the stream. The bentonite quickly made its way into a reservoir controlled by the Johnsonburg Municipal Authority.
Bentonite is a form of impure clay that easily absorbs water and is often used to facilitate gas drilling.

Our most loving and giving mother, Eve Metelski, 89, of Ridgway/Johnsonburg Road, died on Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2012, at the home of her daughters, surrounded by her cherished family.
Eve was born on March 31, 1922, to Barney and Josephine Kolinoski Piurkoski in Johnsonburg. Eve married the love of her life, Dorik Metelski Sr., on May 11, 1946, and together they began their life journey that lasted for 49 wonderful years.

Former PSU player with local ties remembers Paterno

ST. MARYS – As people remember former Penn State head football coach Joe Paterno following his death at age 85 on Sunday, one man with local ties reminisced about what it was like to take the field as a player under Paterno and what he has learned as a result.
A recruited walk-on, Joe Rose played on the team from 1995-1999 as a defensive back and linebacker. He described his experience of being a member of the team under Paterno as "one of the greatest blessings in my life."

Gebauer questions city complaint form process

During the recent St. Marys City Council meeting, Councilman Greg Gebauer inquired about the complaint form process within the city and the process involved when investigating residents' claims.
After studying a complaint report provided by all members of council, Gebauer inquired about a March 2011 incident involving a resident's flooded basement caused by a plugged catch basin.
"To me I would think that would be some type of priority. Was that ever looked into or is it being taken care of?" Gebauer asked.

Conservation District approves road projects

The Elk County Conservation District [ECCD] approved three dirt and gravel road projects during Monday night's regular meeting.
Three applications were submitted for projects in Jones and Fox Townships.
According to ECCD Chairman Russ Braun, a meeting with the Quality Assurance Board was held prior to the regular meeting to rank the projects.
"As far as the rankings are concerned, the two Jones Township projects came in on top and the Fox Township project came in third," Braun said. "They are all good projects and there is enough money to cover all three and all three were approved."
