SMA swim team makes big statement at 2012 Arctic Swim Classic

CLEARFIELD - The SMA swim team made a big statement at the 2012 Arctic Swim Classic at Clearfield High School on Saturday. The annual invitational featured 10 teams from various districts and PIAA classes.
The Dutchmen made a strong showing, capturing second place overall, while the Lady Dutch brought home a fourth-place trophy. This is the first competition for the team, officially kicking off their 2012 season.

St. Marys will travel to Altoona tonight for a 6 p.m. meet

BELLEFONTE – The St. Marys Area gymnastics squad traveled to Bellefonte on Saturday to compete in the Bellefonte Bash Invitational.
"The girls did really well and we are continuing to see our scores go up, especially on our two most difficult events - bars and beam," said St. Marys Area coach Irene McCandless. "We seem to be staying pretty steady score-wise on vault and floor."
McCandless noted that senior Michaela Sorg had an "awesome" floor routine and hit her career highest score of 8.475.

Frack tank rescue simulations enacted in weekend training program

RIDGWAY - Workers in the Marcellus Shale industry and a local well fire department were on hand Saturday for a confined space entry and rescue training and certification program held at the Ridgway Firemen's Carnival Grounds.
During the program, simulations and drills were held that practiced rescuing injured workers from a frack tank. An actual frack tank, a tank that is used to hold water used in the hydrofracturing process that extracts natural gas from shale formations deep beneath the earth's surface, was used as part of the activities.

Flutterbye able to extend grief camp for children another day

Flutterbye is a support program created by the Community Nurses, Inc., to help children cope with the loss of a loved one.
The program reaches out to grades kindergarten through 12th grade. The support program meets monthly for meetings and yearly for a day camp. Because of a grant awarded by Women Who Care, the program will be extended to a two-day camp in the summer of 2012.

Fox supervisors approve timber sale, other items

At last week's Fox Township Supervisors meeting, Supervisor and Public Works Director Randy Gradizzi provided details on the bid results for the timber sale on Toby Water property.
Twenty-two white oak trees were harvested for the sale, with the worth of the timber estimated at $57,000. A motion was approved by the supervisors to accept the top bid of $53,635 from Allegheny Wood Products.
Additional bids were submitted by Brownlee Lumber for $50,160; St. Marys Lumber for $48,788; Walker Lumber for $42,865; Matson Lumber for $38,401; and I.T. Lumber for $34,541.

John A. Fedus, 79, of 7965 Laurel Mill Rd., Ridgway, died Sunday morning, Jan. 8, 2011 at Elk Regional Health Center.
He was born May 15, 1932, in Johnsonburg, son of the late Charles and Anna (Bedner) Fedus.
On Sept. 29, 1956, he married Edith T. Strauss, who survives.
He had resided in Ridgway for the last 55 years and was a member of St. Leo Catholic Church and a member of the American Legion Post #208. He served in the U.S. Air Force and was a veteran of the Korean conflict.

Crusaders defeat Sheffield Wolverines 63-57; host Ridgway tonight

The Elk County Catholic Crusaders defeated the Sheffield Wolverines 63-57 last night in a game played at ECCHS.
Sheffield led for the first half of the contest, holding a 8-6 advantage at the end of the first period and a 17-15 lead at halftime. ECC came to life in the second half, taking a 36-29 lead at the end of the third quarter and then holding on for the 63-57 victory.
"It was a good win," said ECC coach Aaron Straub. "Any time you can give up 28 points in the fourth quarter and still win has got to be a good one."

Bradford Lady Owls edge Lady Dutch 54-51 in D9 League play

The Bradford Area Lady Owls basketball team escaped with a 54-51 District 9 League victory over the St. Marys Area Lady Dutch last night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.

Progress report discussion focuses on future

During Thursday night's meeting of the St. Marys Area School District board of directors, Superintendent Ann Kearney presented information on the annual yearly progress report and explained how the district will adopt and meet new state standards and requirements related to curriculum and graduation.
"We are now transferring our instruction from the Pennsylvania standard [assessment] anchors that we were teaching to and now we're trying to transition over to the Keystone Exams," Kearney said.
