ST. MARYS - With flu outbreaks reaching epidemic proportions across the nation and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reporting 20 pediatric deaths caused by the influenza virus since Sept. 30, 2012, the St. Marys Area School District Board of Directors said they are carefully monitoring cases within the district as schools nationwide are temporarily closing their doors to limit the spread.
RIDGWAY – The Ridgway Borough Police Department reports investigating a shooting incident that occurred at 2 a.m. on Jan. 9 at 145 W. Main Street in Ridgway.
With the St. Marys Area United Way wrapping up its annual fundraising efforts, a representative of an organization that provides group homes to developmentally disabled adults supported in part by United Way funding discussed why this funding is so important.
JOHNSONBURG – Johnsonburg Borough Police Chief Bryan Parana reported on a recent bank robbery during a brief council meeting held Monday afternoon.
According to reports, on the afternoon of Tuesday, Jan. 8, a white male, between 25 and 30 years of age with partial facial hair and approximately 5-foot, 9 inches tall with a slim build, robbed the CNB Bank in Johnsonburg at gunpoint.
JAY TWP. - Questions have been raised concerning natural gas conglomerate EQT's tentative plans to drill in the Byrnes Run watershed and the risks the activity poses to the water source for Jay and Huston townships.
Elizabeth L. "Betty" Wildfire, 91, a resident of Pinecrest Manor and formerly of 114 Cherry Rd., Kersey, died Monday, Jan. 14, 2013 at the Elk Regional Health Center after a brief illness.
She was born Dec. 6, 1921, in Kersey, daughter of the late Clarence W. and Clara T. Anderson Woodley. In February 1952, she married Carl W. Wildfire, who preceded her in death on Feb. 15, 2011.
She was a graduate of Kersey High School and the DuBois Business School.
She is survived by two sons, Rick Wildfire of Kersey and Ron Wildfire of Kersey.
Jerome J. Erich, 77, of 200 Elm Rd., St. Marys, died on Saturday, Jan. 12, 2013 at Christ the King Manor in DuBois following a brief illness.
He was born Sept. 18, 1935 in St. Marys, a son of the late Jerome W. and Catherine Hasselman Erich. On Aug. 11, 1962 in St. Mary's Church, he married Mary Schade Erich, who survives.
Mr. Erich was a lifelong resident of the area and a member of Queen of the World Church. He was a veteran of the Navy and retired from Erich Rentals after many years of service. He enjoyed working in the yard and spending time outdoors.
The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders raised their District 9 League record to 2-1 with a 39-32 victory over the St. Marys Area Lady Dutch Saturday night at the ECCHS gym.
The St. Marys Area gymnastics team defeated visiting Elk County rival Ridgway 125.35 to 90.275 on Saturday afternoon at the St. Marys Area Middle School gymnasium.
