Bishop Persico makes local visit to kick off Catholic Schools Week

To kick off National Catholic Schools Week 2013, the Most Rev. Lawrence Persico, bishop of Erie, made his first official visit to St. Marys since taking over as the bishop of the Diocese of Erie in October 2012 as he celebrated Mass at Queen of the World Church with students from throughout the Elk County Catholic School System, St. Boniface, and St. Leo.

Finish GED now before changes in exam, costs

Anyone who needs to earn a General Equivalency Diploma (GED) high school equivalency test is encouraged to take or finish the exam before requirements change and costs increase in 2014, according to Kate Lomax, director of educational services at the Community Education Council of Elk and Cameron Counties (CEC). The five-part test is being revised and the new version will be released in January 2014.

Laura Jane Schultz, 44, of Swannanoa, N.C., died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2013 at John F. Keever Jr. Solace Center in Asheville.
She was born in Port Allegheny on March 12, 1968, daughter of Lawrence E. Austin and Louise E. Dickinson Smith.
She was a graduate of St. Marys Area High School and was of the Jehovah’s Witness faith.
She is survived by her husband of 25 years, Andrew T. Schultz; a son, Elliot Austin Schultz; a daughter, Tissica Bleu Schultz; a brother, Christopher Smith; and three sisters, Jeanette Sisson, Michele Garcia and Kimberly Austin.

Sophia G. Schmidt

Sophia G. Schmidt, 31, of 31 West Patrick St., Frederick, Md., died unexpectedly Friday, Jan. 25, 2013 in Frederick, Md.
She was born Feb. 27, 1981 in Madison, Wis., daughter of Christian and Heidi Dorsey Schmidt, who survive, of St. Marys.
In 1990 the family moved to St. Marys and Sophia graduated from Elk County Catholic High School, Class of 1999. She also graduated from Bucknell University in 2004 and received her master’s degree from Johns Hopkins University in 2011. She was an employee of the Science Applications International Corporation.

Donald V. Reed

Donald V. Reed, 81, formerly of Ridge Road in Kersey, died on Sunday, Jan, 27, 2013 at Pinecrest Nursing Home in St. Marys.
He was born on Jan. 18, 1932 in Bradford, son of the late Richard and Mary Charnisky Reed.
Donald was Protestant by faith. He had been employed at Speer Carbon in St. Marys.
He is survived by one brother, William F. (Dorothy) Reed of Kersey; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Milton, Marvin and Raymond Reed; and one sister, Clara Anderson.

Kathleen J. “Kay” Caliari

Kathleen J. “Kay” Caliari, 75, of Hoovertown Road in Penfield, died Sunday, Jan. 27, 2013 at the Geisinger Medical Center in Danville.
Born on Oct. 11, 1937 in Elk County, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Florence (Mosier) Harvey.
She was married to Irvin L. Caliari. He preceded her in death on May 9, 2003.
She retired from Brockway Glass after over 30 years of service. She also worked at Paws & Claws Pet Grooming in Penfield. She enjoyed her horses and her dogs and going to the casino in Salamanca.

Sally J. Antoine

Sally J. Antoine, 63, of 1104 Gordon St., Natrona Heights, died at the home of her daughter at 9 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 27, 2013 following an illness of the past several months.
She was born in Allegheny County, Harrison Township, on June 6, 1949, the daughter of Gertrude Sherrieb and the late Blaine Anderson.
She resided in Harrison Township for most of her life and graduated from Har-Brack High School, Class of 1967. She was employed as an administrative assistant for UPMC Heritage Place, Shadyside. She enjoyed crafts and craft shows, gardening, and spending time with her grandchildren.
