Phoebe Hutton Shadd, age 78, died Sunday, Oct. 13, 2013 in Minden, La.
She was born in Mahaffey on Feb. 25, 1935.
She was a homemaker, wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, cousin and friend. Phoebe was a very special person who loved life and the family she raised. She was an excellent cook, seamstress and was an avid traveller with her husband of 53 years.
Phoebe was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Shadd; her mother, Angeline Reasinger Hutton; and brothers George Hutton, Howard Hutton and Harold Hutton.
Jay Dennis McClain, 72, of 229 Grandview Rd. St. Marys, died on Monday, Oct.14, 2013, at the Elk Regional Health Center after a lengthy illness.
He was born March 7, 1941 in St. Marys, son of the late Jay P. and Carolyn M. Wright McClain. He was a lifelong resident of the area and was a graduate of St. Marys High School, Class of 1957. Mr. McClain was a retired employee of Intech Metals in Ridgway.
He was married to Katherine Malburg Steele, who survives, of Virginia.
Kris Kronenwetter is taking over the helm at the St. Marys Area United Way as the organization's new executive director.
â€œKris has been a staple in our community for years. Her familiarity with our community will help to broaden our impact on the organizations and citizens that benefit from the United Way," said Margie Schlimm, St. Marys Area United Way board president.
Nationally touring comic Bubba Bradley, a 1999 graduate of Elk County Catholic High School, returned to ECC last Friday as the featured speaker at a student assembly.
Leading up to that assembly, creative writing teacher Grace Messineo gave her students an assignment to critique Bradley's speech based on the four types of satire writing.
