Fire destroys Jay Twp. home

October 24, 2013

WEEDVILLE – A fire broke out late Wednesday night at 1197 River Rd. [state Route 555] in Jay Township and destroyed a single story residence.
The occupants are listed as Dennis L. Celinski, 66, of Weedville, and Curtis L. Piszenski, also of Weedville. They were home at the time of the fire and escaped uninjured.

New gift shop offers array of handmade items

Cynthia Simchick and Tina Pistner of St. Marys have teamed up to open Cyntina's Treasures Gift Shop, a small shop located inside the Pistner residence located at 153 Fern Ln.
The small, quaint shop offers an array of handmade items such as wreaths, flower arrangements, candles, jewelry and scarves, as well as some retail pieces as well.
"It's a fun shop," Simchick said.

PennDOT places life-size elk cutouts

RIDGWAY – Traffic accidents involving elk pose a real danger to area residents. Although many think of the elk as an elusive animal, they frequent the roadways, particularly in autumn which is their breeding season.
Recently, PennDOT officials placed two life-size elk cutouts on the PennDOT property in Ridgway in order to show just how big these animals really are.

Fire breaks out in Byrnedale

Area firefighters were reportedly battling a large structure fire at 1157 River Road in Byrnedale that reportedly broke out around 11:20 p.m. Wednesday. Bennetts Valley Ambulance, Elk Company 3, 5, and 1 all responded to the scene.

Crusaders eliminated with 3-2 loss to Brockway

 The Elk County Catholic Crusader soccer team saw their season come to an end on Wednesday evening in a tough match against Brockway in the D9 quarterfinals played under the lights at Frank Varischetti Field.

Chester C. Kasmierski

Chester C. Kasmierski, 69, of Ridgway died Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2013 at Elk Regional Medical Center.
He was born May 19, 1944 in Johnsonburg, the son of Charles and Theresa Zawacki Kasmierski. He married Carol O. Bjorkquist. She preceded him in death on Feb. 24, 1999. Mr. Kasmierski had been employed at Ridgway Color for over 30 years and later at PASI. He served in the Pennsylvania National Guard.

Shutdown has little effect on North Central

RIDGWAY – The recent 16-day federal government shutdown had little effect on the North Central Pennsylvania Regional Planning and Development Commission as officials for the reimbursement-based organization were prepared for the duration.
