Kane driver in 6-fatality wreck is arraigned

October 29, 2013

A Kane woman charged with manslaughter as a drug-influenced driver in a horrific six-fatality traffic accident Aug. 31 was arraigned Tuesday.
Kane District Court Judge Dave Engman said he conducted the preliminary arraignment proceeding for Kathleen S. Douglas, 37, in her room at the Lutheran Home at Kane.

Light Up Night plans in the works

Area residents are encouraged to kick off the holiday season during the upcoming annual Light Up Night, sponsored by the St. Marys Area Chamber of Commerce, being held Friday, Nov. 22 in St. Marys.
As organizers work diligently in planning the event, they greatly appreciate any involvement by community groups and clubs, schools, organizations, businesses and individuals who are interested in volunteering for the event in any capacity, such as window mannequins, elves and much more.

Conservation District continues working on West Creek Wetlands project

The Elk County Conservation District is still continuing its efforts to complete the West Creek Wetlands project.
"We have been working on putting together some bid packets, to see if we can get some other costs proposals after the initial proposal we got," said district manager, Steve Putt.

Reward being offered for information related to shooting of bull elk

BENEZETTE – The Keystone Elk Country Alliance and other area businesses are offering a $3,800 reward for information that leads to the arrest and prosecution of the individual or individuals responsible for shooting a 5x5 bull elk in the early morning hours of Tuesday, Oct. 15.

Lady Crusaders are D9 champs, Bille qualifies for states

An impressive run by members of the Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader cross country team gave the squad the edge over North Clarion on Saturday in Ridgway as ECC used a 1-point advantage to claim the girls' District 9 Class A team title.
The Elk Catholic girls ended the day with 54 points while North Clarion came in second with 55. Both teams will advance to the PIAA Cross Country Championships at Parkview Cross Country Course in Hershey on Saturday, Nov. 2.

Schreiber siblings qualify for states for St. Marys Area

Siblings Shelby and Mitchell Schreiber both earned trips to this weekend's PIAA State Cross Country Championships in Hersey with impressive runs in their respective races at Saturday's D9 Cross Country Championship Meet in Ridgway.

Charles J. Gorske, 89, of St. Marys died unexpectedly Saturday evening, October 26, 2013 at the Elk Regional Health Center.
He was born May 19, 1924 in Erie, son of the late Rudolph and Rose Bartholemis Gorske. He was a graduate of Johnsonburg High School class of 1942 where he played football for the Rams. He was a former employee of Leashore Calgift Advertising and retired from Keller Oil Co.
On Aug. 14, 1948, at Sacred Heart Church, he married Marthadel Robacker who preceded him in death on Nov. 3, 1992. On July 19, 1996, at Sacred Heart Church, he married Carol Leuschel who survives.

Brenda L. Boyer

Brenda L. Boyer, 56, of West Sherman Avenue, DuBois, died Friday, Oct. 25, 2013 as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
She was born Oct. 15, 1957 in DuBois, daughter of the late Theodore E. and Betty J. (Bell) Chiodo.
On Aug. 11, 1979, she married James C. Boyer, he survives.      
She was a graduate of St. Marys High School, Class of 1975.
She served many years with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, including PennDOT secretary to the Elk/McKean County manager and most recently SCI Forest as secretary to the superintendent.

SMA Marching Band following yellow brick road to success

The St. Marys Area High School Marching Band reached a milestone achievement by bringing home their 10th consecutive Chapter 11 Championship title recently, for their rendition of "The Wizard of Oz."
"The hard work and tremendous effort the students put into practice and performances is amazing. They continually impress my staff and I as they look to improve their score and overall performance each and every week," said SMA Marching Band Director Adam Brooks.
