RIDGWAY â€“ The recent 16-day federal government shutdown had little effect on the North Central Pennsylvania Regional Planning and Development Commission as officials for the reimbursement-based organization were prepared for the duration.
Elk County Catholic's Elliott Struble medaled at the PIAA Class AA Golf Championships by placing eighth. The two-day tournament was played at the Heritage Hills Golf Course in York.
Struble finished the two-day tournament with a 78-78-156. In Tuesday's final round, Struble shot a 39-39-78.
The fifth seeded Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders traveled to Curwensville to take on the fourth seeded Lady Tide on Tuesday evening in a D9 quarterfinal matchup played under the lights at Riverside Stadium. Going into the match, the Lady Crusaders had not lost in their last 13 games, and they extended that streak to 14 with a 3-2 victory over Curwensville.
Diane M. Schloder, 72, of 72 Erie Ave., Apt. 304, St. Marys, died on Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2013 at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh following a brief illness.
She was born May 19, 1941 in St. Marys, a daughter of Miriam Kreckle Arnold of St. Marys and the late Thomas Arnold.
Rita Marconi, 88, of Hamburg, N.Y. died on Oct. 21.
Rita was the wife of the late James Winnert and Victor Marconi; mother of Richard and Ronald Winnert; grandmother of Brandy Jeremy, Boomer, Joseph, Veronica, Nicholas and Sabrina; great-grandmother of Sean, Kayden and Christian. Rita was a former resident of St. Marys and worked as an LPN at OLV Hospital in Lackawanna, N.Y.
Ronald E. Dixon, 60, of Ridgway, died unexpectedly on Oct. 21.
He was born Sept. 20, 1953, the son of Eugene and Virginia Dixon. He was married to JoAnne Dixon on Sept. 1, 1984.
Three members of St. Marys City Council volunteered to work with the Shade Tree Commission in making changes within the organization as discussed during Monday evening's council meeting.
Councilman Bob Roberts reported he recently met with Shade Tree Commission Chairperson Gail Shturtz along with two other members of the commission.
During the meeting Roberts asked if the commission would be willing to work with council toward instating changes.
Jacqueline Turner, 74, of 3986 Tonbridge Lane, Winston-Salem, N.C. died on Monday, Sept. 30 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home following a lengthy illness.
She was born May 12, 1937 in St. Marys, the daughter of the late E. J. "Jack" and Loretta Benninger Terry. She graduated from Central Catholic High School class of 1957.
On Dec. 10, 1983 in Ridgway she married William Turner who survives.
Carmella P. Sellers, age 81, of Weedville, died Friday, Oct. 18, 2013 at Elk Regional Health Center after a lengthy illness.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 10 a.m., Friday, Oct. 25, 2013 at the St. Joseph Catholic Church, Force, with Father Thomas Tyler celebrant.
Interment will be in St. Joseph Church Cemetery.
There will be no visitation.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Bennetts Valley Ambulance.
Linda L. Murphy, 65, of Cape Coral, Fla., formerly of Key West and Philadelphia, died Saturday, Oct. 12, 2013 in Cape Coral.
She was born Oct. 16, 1947 in Oil City to James and Jeanne Clifford.
