Lady Dutch soccer wins 3-0 over Smethport on senior night

The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch soccer team recorded a 3-0 victory over the visiting Smethport Lady Hubbers on Wednesday afternoon at the SMAHS soccer field. The match was also senior night for the Lady Dutch.

ECC's Elliott Struble qualifies for PIAA Golf Championship

Elk County Catholic senior Elliott Struble qualified for the PIAA Golf Championships by placing fourth in the West Regional held Wednesday at Tom's Run Golf Course at Chestnut Ridge Golf Resort in Blairsville.
Struble finished with an 18-hole total of 36-37-73 which was good for fourth place.

Todd J. "TJ" Annis

Todd J. "TJ" Annis, 36, of 463 Walnut St., St. Marys, died on Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2013 at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh following complications of a seizure.
He was born June 30, 1977 in St. Marys, a son of Roger "Ted" and Sharon Skok Annis of St. Marys
On May 29, 2004 in Sacred Heart Church, he married Amanda Detsch Annis, who survives.

Donald Edward Smitley

Donald Edward Smitley, 57, of Dunbar, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2013 at his residence.
He was born April 25, 1956 in Connellsville, son of the late Howard R. Smitley and Betty Klink Smitley.
Don was a wonderful husband, father, brother and friend.
He was a Union Secretary of the former Foseco Corp., a member of the Old Time Fiddlers, Irishtown Sportsman Club, Dunbar Boys Blue Grass Band and a member and superintendant of Pechin Chapel.
He worked as a lift operator for Sony.

AmeriCorps teachers benefitting school district

St. Marys Area School District students are benefitting from the services provided by two local AmeriCorps teachers, Karen Wendel and Dave Herbstritt. Each teacher explained their involvement with the program during a recent St. Marys Area School District board of directors workshop.
Joe Collins, SMASD director of curriculum and instruction, introduced the teachers.
"I'm very happy to have these two fine people join St. Marys and helping us through AmeriCorps and I appreciate Americorps for providing this," Collins said.

Persnickety and SMP partner for breast cancer fundraising

Shoppers who stroll down Erie Avenue may notice something new in town. What was once The Variety Shop is now under new management as The Persnickety Gift Boutique. Rebajean Stone was a Variety Shop vendor and now owns Persnickety.
“I came here as a vendor last November, and in August I took it over to run it myself,” Stone said. “Partially because I am disabled, I thought this would be a chance that I could get out and actually do something. I’ve got wonderful women who work here and help keep this place going, and it’s working.”

New recycler found for electronics

eLoop LLC, a Pittsburgh-based electronics recycler, has taken over handling all of the electronics collected at the Community Recycling Center, according to Elk County Solid Waste/Recycling Coordinator Bekki Titchner.
The company that previously handled the electronics collected at the center, eco International, recently closed its doors, prompting the change.

ECC cross country teams host Brockway, Ridgway squads

The Elk County Catholic cross country teams closed out their home meet season Tuesday playing host to Brockway and Ridgway on Senior Night.
The Crusaders defeated the Rovers by a 22-36 score while the Lady Crusaders beat the Lady Rovers 21-34.

Lady Dutch volleyball outlasts Ridgway 3-1

The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch volleyball team raised their record to 9-4 on the season with a 3-1 victory over the Ridgway Lady Elkers Tuesday night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.
