The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders picked up a 6-2 senior night victory over the Port Allegany Lady Gators on Tuesday afternoon at Benzinger Park.

The Elk County Catholic Crusader soccer team avenged a tough midseason loss to Brookville on Tuesday with a 3-0 senior night victory over the Raiders in a match played at Angela Huey Memorial Field in Kersey.

Phoebe Hutton Shadd

Phoebe Hutton Shadd, age 78, died Sunday, Oct. 13, 2013 in Minden, La.
She was born in Mahaffey on Feb. 25, 1935.
She was a homemaker, wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, cousin and friend. Phoebe was a very special person who loved life and the family she raised. She was an excellent cook, seamstress and was an avid traveller with her husband of 53 years.
Phoebe was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Shadd; her mother, Angeline Reasinger Hutton; and brothers George Hutton, Howard Hutton and Harold Hutton.

Jay Dennis McClain

Jay Dennis McClain, 72, of 229 Grandview Rd. St. Marys, died on Monday, Oct.14, 2013, at the Elk Regional Health Center after a lengthy illness.
He was born March 7, 1941 in St. Marys, son of the late Jay P. and Carolyn M. Wright McClain. He was a lifelong resident of the area and was a graduate of St. Marys High School, Class of 1957. Mr. McClain was a retired employee of Intech Metals in Ridgway.
He was married to Katherine Malburg Steele, who survives, of Virginia.

United Way welcomes new executive director

Kris Kronenwetter is taking over the helm at the St. Marys Area United Way as the organization's new executive director.
“Kris has been a staple in our community for years. Her familiarity with our community will help to broaden our impact on the organizations and citizens that benefit from the United Way," said Margie Schlimm, St. Marys Area United Way board president.

Comedian shares advice with creative writing students

Nationally touring comic Bubba Bradley, a 1999 graduate of Elk County Catholic High School, returned to ECC last Friday as the featured speaker at a student assembly.
Leading up to that assembly, creative writing teacher Grace Messineo gave her students an assignment to critique Bradley's speech based on the four types of satire writing.

Lady Dutch win District 9-AA tennis team championship

The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch tennis team captured the District 9-AA tennis team championship Monday afternoon at the DuBois Area High School courts by defeating the Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders by a 3-2 score.

Douglas had high level of drug in bloodstream

KANE – An affidavit of probable cause filed in Magisterial District Court 48-3-04 shows Kathleen S. Douglas, age 37, of North Tionesta Avenue, Kane, had "levels of the Schedule IV controlled substance Clonazepam (that) were several times greater than they should have been given the dosage prescribed" when she was involved in a fatal crash that killed six people.

Community-wide Pink Day set for Friday

The annual community-wide Pink Day is scheduled for Friday throughout the county, and area students - and residents in general - are encouraged to "get their pink on" to show their support for breast cancer awareness.
According to information available on the American Cancer Society's website, "about one in eight women in the U.S. will develop invasive breast cancer during their lifetime."
