Joann M. Eckert, 81, of 161 Teaberry Rd., St. Marys, died Sunday, Dec. 15, 2013 at the Life Care Hospital in Pittsburgh after a brief illness.
She was born Sept. 26, 1932, in Shawmut, daughter of the late John and Alice Keller Carr. On October 30, 1954, in the St. Mary's Church, she married Arthur A. Eckert, and he preceded her in death on June 12, 1994.
Mrs. Eckert was a lifelong resident of the area and was a graduate of Kersey High School. She was a retired employee of the Keystone Powdered Metal Co., retiring in 1989. She was a member of the Queen of the World Church.
Virginia M. Hartland, 96, of Ridgmont Assisted Living, died Sunday, Dec. 15, 2013, at her residence.
She was born June 3, 1917 in Ridgway, the daughter of the late Harry and Flora Rogers Kirk.
She married Merlin Hartland, who predeceased her on May 2, 2000.
Mrs. Hartland resided in Ridgway all of her life. She was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, where she was in the choir for 54 years. She was a sales clerk at Cliffe's for many years. She enjoyed gardening, reading, and playing the organ.
Evelyn F. Judice, 88, of Elk Towers and formerly of E. Kaul Avenue, St. Marys, died on Friday, Dec.13, 2013 at Elk Regional Health Center.
She was born April 13, 1925 in St. Marys, a daughter of the late William and Clara Meyer Fritz.
On July 30, 1945 in St. Marys Church, she married the late Paul Judice, who preceded her in death on Nov. 3, 1999.
Florence S. Lucanik, 88, of 299 State St., St. Marys, died peacefully on Saturday, Dec. 14, 2013, at her home surrounded by her family.
She was born Jan. 4, 1925, a daughter of the late Joseph and Veronica Englehart Wickett of St. Marys.
She leaves behind many loving family members and cherished friends. She enjoyed life and touched many lives with her warm spirit and genuine smile. She will be greatly missed by those who knew her.
Mark A. Frey, 83, of 736 West Joseph Rd., St. Marys, died on Friday, Dec. 13, 2013, at the Elk Haven Nursing Home after a lengthy illness.
He was born July 16, 1930 in St. Marys, son of the late Albert and Julia Breindel Frey. On Nov. 25, 1950 in the St. Maryâ€™s Church, he married Ruth M. Sporner, who survives.
Mary K. McCarren, 65, of 67 Pine Ave., Force, died on Friday, Dec. 13, 2013 at her home.
She was born Sept. 28, 1948 in Punxsutawney, a daughter of Ann Swanson Manners of St. Marys and the late Alfred "Pete" Manners, who preceded her in death on Sept. 3, 2013.
On June 8, 1968 in St. Boniface Church, she married Francis McCarren Sr., who survives.
Mary was a lifelong resident of the area and attended Bennetts Valley High School.Â She was Methodist by faith and enjoyed crocheting, bingo and baking.Â She also enjoyed camping and country music.
Recently representatives from the Elk County Humane Society addressed the growing problem of feline overpopulation and their proposed efforts to lessen the burden on the shelter and area residents.
Elk County Humane Society President Joe Boylan explained the goal of the society is to provide an adequate place to temporarily house animals until most can be adopted and to educate the community on the benefits associated with spaying and neutering to reduce the magnitude of the situation going forward.
Childhood memories inspired an extensive hobby for Chuck Fox and Tom Schloder. â€śTomâ€™s Trains,â€ť an extensive model train display spans a large room at Schloderâ€™s home on East Eschbach Road.
â€śIt just excites me doing this,â€ť Schloder said. â€śI spend some time every day tinkering around on these trains."
Schloder remembers finding his first model train set up around the Christmas tree on the Christmas morning of 1947.
The annual Wreaths Across America ceremony was held Saturday at noon, in conjunction with the wreath laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery. Coordinator Dolly Wehler said that this year's ceremony had the most people in attendance, in spite of a heavy snowstorm.
