Joseph V. Parana

December 22, 2013

Joseph V. Parana, 81, of 400 Rock St., Ridgway, died unexpectedly at his home on Friday, Dec. 20, 2013.
He was born Jan. 22, 1932 in Johnsonburg, the son of the late Frank and Mary Raubenstrauch Parana.
He married Sara J. Ames, and she predeceased him on Oct. 15, 2012.
He attended Holy Rosary schools.
Mr. Parana was a lifelong member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

Doris Kaye Carter O'Donnell

Doris Kaye Carter O'Donnell, 46, of 100 Higgins Rd., Kersey, died Sunday, Dec. 22, 2013 at her home.
She was born June 28, 1967, in Ridgway, daughter of David and Janice Dallasen Carter.
On Nov. 12, 1988, in the St. Boniface Church, she married Sean P. O'Donnell, who preceded her in death on Nov. 23, 1994.
She was a lifelong resident of the area, a member of the St. Boniface Church, attended St. Boniface School, and graduated from St. Marys Area High School, Class of 1985. She was employed by Keystone Powder Metal Products in St. Marys.

Robert C. Beck Sr.

Robert C. Beck Sr., 71, of M. Pleasant Road, Penfield, died on Friday, Dec. 20, 2013 at the DuBois Nursing Home after a lengthy illness.
He was born Feb. 13, 1942 in Gardner Hill, Weedville, son of the late John and Pauline (Thurston) Beck.
His loving wife of 51 years, Linda L. (Swartz) Beck survives.
He was raised in St. Marys and has lived in Penfield since 1962. He attended Gardner Hill Church, and loved hunting, fishing, and his camp on Gardner Hill.

Angeline Facchine

Angeline Facchine, 94, of a lifelong resident of Shawmut Road, Brockport, and currently a resident at Pinecrest Manor in St. Marys, died Sunday, Dec. 22, 2013 surrounded by her
children at at Pinecrest Manor.
She was born Jan. 1, 1919 in Brandy Camp, daughter of Angelo and Louisa Mariucci Armanini.
July 12, 1947
She was the devoted wife of Joseph G. Facchine, who she married on July 12, 1947. He died Dec. 3, 1988.
She was a member at Holy Cross Church in Brandy Camp.
Angeline was a member of the Rosary Society and the Blue Army.

Dutch record 65-56 D9 League win over Brookville

The St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen used a strong first half to build a 32-18 lead then held on in the second half for a 65-56 District 9 League win over the Brookville Raiders Friday night at the Dutch Oven.
The Dutch held a 51-34 lead after three quarters of play. In the final period, Brookville outscored the Dutch 22-14 making the final score 65-56 in favor of St. Marys.

Lady Crusaders defeat Lady Rovers 43-26

The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader basketball team notched another victory as they defeated the visiting Brockway Lady Rovers 43-26 on Friday night at the ECCHS gymnasium.
The Lady Crusaders had eight of their 11 players put points on the board and were in control the entire way as they led 11-3 after one, held a 22-8 lead at halftime, and were up 33-19 at the end of the third.

Martin appears at pre-trial hearing in death of girlfriend

RIDGWAY – On Friday morning accused murderer Nicholas Martin of Johnsonburg, charged in the killing of his 18-year-old girlfriend Alyssa Forsyth of Ridgway, appeared in front of Elk County President Judge Richard Masson as part of a pre-trial hearing.

SMAHS students create medallions for EQT tournament

The 24 athletes named to the All-Tournament teams at the upcoming EQT Energy Classic Elk County Holiday Tournament will each receive a special brass medallion to commemorate the occasion, something in which the students in the drafting and Metal Working Occupations (MWO) students at St. Marys Area can take special pride. Instead of ordering the medallions from an outside source, St. Marys Area High School, the main host school for the tournament, turned to those students and asked them to take on the project.

Firefighters respond to Johnsonburg blaze

JOHNSONBURG – Area firefighters responded to a fire shortly after 12:30 a.m. early Friday morning in the 200 block of Blaine Avenue in Johnsonburg.
The call came in at 12:33 a.m. to 204 Blaine Ave., a residence situated on a borough road running parallel to the state Route 219 bypass.

The call came in at 12:33 a.m. to 204 Blaine Ave., a residence situated on a borough road running parallel to the state Route 219 bypass.
Elk Company 2 (Johnsonburg) and St. Marys Ambulance were called at 12:33 a.m.; Elk Company 1 (Crystal Fire Department out of St. Marys), Elk Company 4 (Ridgway), Elk Company 6 (Wilcox) were called out at 12:44 a.m., and Elk Company 5 (Jay Township) responded at 1 a.m.
