John E. "Ed" Neureiter, 87, of 439 Main St., Kersey, died Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2013 at the Pinecrest Manor after a lengthy illness.
He was born July 12, 1926 in Kersey, son of the late Raymond and Bertha Gahr Neureiter.
On May 23, 1953, in the St. Marys Church, he married Maudie Brennan who survives.
Mary Ann Micale, 90, a resident of Pinecrest Manor and formerly of 24634 Bennets Valley Highway, Weedville, died Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2013 at the Pinecrest Manor after a lengthy illness.
She was born Sept. 17 1923 in St. Marys, daughter of the late Joseph and Josephine Fledderman Haberberger. On Oct. 25, 1946, in the St. Mary's Church, she married William J. "Dude" Micale, who preceded her in death on Feb. 15, 2005.
Mrs. Micale was a lifelong resident of the area and attended St. Marys Catholic schools. She was a member of the St. Boniface Church.
A current St. Marys hotel owner expressed his concern about the city's involvement with the new downtown hotel project.
Sam Shaw, owner of Best Western Hotel in St. Marys was joined by Damion Bevacqua, his attorney from Pontzer and Pontzer based in Ridgway, who stated their main concern is about the city entering into the private market and what council believes is the economic benefit to subsidize competition for existing businesses noting the current three hotels in the city being Best Western, Comfort Inn and Gunners.
On Monday afternoon, the office of President Judge Richard A. Masson removed a Nativity scene located under the Christmas tree outside the sheriff's office inside the Elk County Courthouse.
According to Masson, the removal was a "precursory" measure in order to avoid complaints stemming from religious symbolism being displayed in a government building.

This terse comment from Kane District Court Judge David Engman came Wednesday after his action that transfers Kathleen S. Douglas to the McKean County Jail.
Douglas, 37, of Kane is charged with manslaughter as an alleged drug-influenced driver in a horrific six-fatality traffic accident Aug. 31 near Lantz Corners.

Jesse Robert DeNio, 36, of Vine Road, St. Marys, died Monday, Dec. 16, 2013, at the UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh.
He was born October 22, 1977 in St. Marys, son of the late Karl J. â€śQuickâ€ť DeNio and Susan J. Tornatore Strandberg, who survives of St. Marys.
He was a lifelong resident of the area and was a graduate of St. Marys Area High School, Class of 1997.
Jesse loved to play guitar and enjoyed his motorcycle, four-wheeler, cars, and anything fast.
Joan L. Hoyt Gilmore, 75, of 80 Oak St., Wilcox died on December 16, 2013 at Kane Community Hospital following a brief illness
She was born on September 13, 1938 in Johnsonburg, daughter of Paul "Buck" and Edna Martinez Williams Stewart.
She married Joseph R. Gilmore on February 14, 1970 in the Wilcox Lutheran Church. He died July 9, 2007.
