Shriner Hospital Crusade taking place May 17-18

Local members of the Jaffa Shrine will be conducting their annual Shrine Hospital Crusade on May 17 and 18. Best known for their colorful parades and distinctive red hats, the Shriners are always searching for children in need of orthopedic or burn care. Shriners will be situated outside both entrances of Wal-Mart and Save-A-Lot, on Brusselles Street in St. Marys, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on both days.

Ridgway man sentenced to state prison for marijuana grow

RIDGWAY – A jury of 12 Elk County residents, ready to hear the case of a Ridgway man charged with growing marijuana at his home, were sent home after an 11th hour plea bargain and sentence were entered behind closed doors in Elk County Court Tuesday.
The jury trial of Scott M. Lovell, 44, of Ridgway, was set to begin Tuesday but the defendant opted to accept a last minute plea bargain in which he pled guilty to a felony charge of possession with intent to manufacture marijuana and was sentenced to serve 18 months to five years in a state prison and ordered to pay a $5,000 fine.

Investigation touched off after pipe bomb defused in Kersey

FOX TWP. – According to police reports, on Monday morning a passerby in a remote, wooded area of Kersey found what authorities are calling a pipe bomb.

Toddler is hurt in fall from window on 3rd floor of Bradford apartment

BRADFORD – A 2-year-girl was injured Tuesday after falling from an open window on the third floor of a Bradford apartment building.
Bradford city police identified the girl as Carlyn Lorenzi. The parents are Andrew Lorenzi and Miranda Black, police said.
The girl fell from the window at 12:23 p.m. Tuesday at Apartment D at 86 Main St. near the Subway store.

Investigation touched off after pipe bomb defused in Kersey

FOX TWP. – According to police reports, on Monday morning a passerby in a remote, wooded area of Kersey found what authorities are calling a pipe bomb.
It was around 8:35 a.m., Monday morning when police were called to the area of Boone Mountain Road, south of Sawmill Run Road in Fox Township for reports of a suspicious package laying alongside the roadway.
Police say what they found was a makeshift explosive device, comprised of a metal pipe, approximately 4 inches long and three-quarters of an inch in diameter with threaded end caps.

Betty J. Hritz

Betty J. Hritz, 87, of Punxsutawney, died Monday, May 13, 2013.
Born November 3, 1925 in Punxsutawney, she was a daughter of the late Peter and Sophia (Sheofsky) Hritz.
She was a member of the Saint Peter and Paul Byzantine Church in Punxsutawney.  She was a member of the church choir.
Ms. Hritz worked for 32 years as the secretary in the business office of the administrators office at Punxsutawney Area High School from 1976 until her retirement in 2008.  Her prior employment included Sylvania, Jones Furniture and Wolf's Furniture.

Charles (Charlie) Victor Erickson

Charles (Charlie) Victor Erickson, 88, of Main Street, Brockway, died on May 13, 2013 at Christ the King Manor in DuBois.
Born August 11, 1924, in Penfield, he was the son of the late Charles V. and Anna Hackett Erickson.
On June 19, 1954 in Tyler Charlie married Mrs. Frances (Pat) Erickson. She survives.
