The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch won the Elk County Softball Tournament, finishing the tournament with an 8-3 win over Elk County Catholic in the championship game held Friday at Francis S. Grandinetti Elementary School in Ridgway.
The Elk County Catholic Crusader baseball team used the two-hit pitching of Brandon Schlimm to advance to today's championship game against the Johnsonburg Rams. Elk Catholic defeated the Ridgway Elkers 7-2 to reach today's title game.
The Johnsonburg Rams held off a late attempted rally from St. Marys Area on Friday evening to come away with a 6-3 win in an opening round game in the Elk County Baseball Tournament at Berwind Park.
WILLIAMSPORT â Federal public defenders for an Emporium man charged with the August 2012 carjacking of a bank employee at gunpoint have succeeded in once again postponing the trial, this time citing the adverse impacts of federal budget sequestration cuts on their legal practice. Thomas Edward Smith, 58, of Emporium was indicted on Sept. 5, 2012 by a federal grand jury for the Aug. 8, 2012 attempted kidnapping of a female bank executive at gunpoint after an alleged dispute with the bank over a mortgage foreclosure.
Illegal dumping has become an issue of concern yet again as members of the Elk County Solid Waste Authority (SWA) discussed during their recent meeting. Two recent cleanups on Jackson/West Creek Roads in St. Marys and Old State Road, located between Johnsonburg and Wilcox, netted a significant amount of litter and tires.
At 7:15 p.m. Monday night Ridgway resident and author Dale E. Fox will be departing from JFK Airport to begin a new life overseas. Fox will be leaving behind her love of the Pennsylvania Wilds to make a new start in another part of the world she is passionate about-- the Middle East, particularly Istanbul, Turkey.
Michael W. "Mick Weis, 66, of 149 West Condot Road, St. Marys, died Friday, May 3, 2013 at the Select Specialty Hospital in Johnstown after a lengthy illness.
He was born May 22, 1946 in St. Marys, son of the late Leo "Bunk" and Audrey Wendel Weis.
In July of 1967, in Pittsburgh, he married Rita M. Brendel, who survives.
Raymond R. Rettger, 54, of 101 N. Mill St., Ridgway, died Friday, May 3, 2013 at his residence unexpectedly.
He was born in St. Marys on September 3, 1958, son of the late Charles J. and Edith Squires Rettger.
Mr. Rettger had lived in Lakewood, N.J. for many years and returned to the area two years ago. He was a graduate of St. Marys High Schoool. He enjoyed model railroading, enjoyed playing his guitar and banjo, and enjoyed Blue Grass music.
Mary Jo Burï¬eld, 67, of Jefferson Manor, Brookville, and formerly of St. Marys died on Tuesday, April 30, 2013 at the Clarion Hospital in Clarion following a lengthy illness.
She was born October 8, 1945 in St. Marys, a daughter of the late Ambrose and Bertha Brem Schreiber.
On October 11, 1969, she married the late David Burï¬eld, who preceded her in death on February 14, 2000.
Mrs. Burï¬eld was a member of St. Mary's Church.Â She graduated from St. Marys Area High School and had been employed by First Laurel Bank and Sylvania.Â She enjoyed her pets, especially her dog, Billy.
The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch softball team saw their record slip to 7-4 on the season as they lost a tough 3-2 contest to the Punxsutawney Lady Chucks Thursday at the SMAHS softball field.
