Hospice fundraiser to have used books, bake sale, and free screenings

In 2006, the Community Nurses held a one-day used book sale offering several hundred books available for purchase for a small fee, and the event was held in the small library adjacent to the cafeteria at Sacred Heart Activity Center to raise money for their hospice program. Since that time, the sale has continued to grow and now typically has over 10,000 used books available for purchase at the St. Marys Catholic Middle School cafeteria over a four-day period.

Mary S. Butera

Mary S. Butera, 87, of 326 Allenhurst Ave., Ridgway, died, Friday, May 17, 2013, at Elk Regional Health Center.
She was born in Platania, Italy, the daughter of Luigi and Pasqualina Butera, and sister of Frank M. Butera, who preceded her in death.
She was a resident of Ridgway and Erie, and a member of the St. Luke’s Catholic Church in Erie, and St. Leo’s Church in Ridgway.

Second bomb this week found in Elk County Thursday

ST. MARYS – Local police are looking for the person, or persons, responsible for a pair of explosive devices found within days, and miles, of each other in Elk County this week.
On Thursday night, police were called to Aviation Way in St. Marys at around 7 p.m. for reports of a pipe bomb found in a wooded area.

Day on the firing range therapeutic for wounded vets

RIDGWAY – Wounded veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, amputees and others bearing invisible scars, were in Ridgway Friday for a long-range shooting event, part of a larger initiative intended to aide them in their transitions back into civilian life.

ST. MARYS - A grassy knoll in the shadow of St. Mary's Church now bears 93 white, wooden crosses placed there Friday by the St. Marys Servicemen's Burial Detail as part of an annual tradition honoring St. Marys natives fallen in military service.

Dutchmen claim three titles at D9 Class AAA Championship Meet

The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch track and field team earned a trio of titles at the District 9 Class AAA Track and Field Championship Meet at the Brookville Area High School on Thursday afternoon. Recording the wins for St. Marys Area were the 4x800 meter relay team of Alec Foster, Austin Frey, Clancy Wiesner, and Dalton Gennocro; the 4x400 meter relay team of Alec Foster, Josh Burns, Mitchell O'Vell, and Dalton Gennocro; and Josh Burns in the 110 meter hurdles.

Lady Dutch down Bradford Lady Owls 12-0 in five innings

The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch softball team defeated the Bradford Lady Owls by a 12-0 score in five innings Thursday afternoon at the SMAHS softball field.

Fireworks show move offers added options for event

The St. Marys Independence Day Celebration has a new home this year at the St. Marys Municipal Airport. The change is a result of the closing of the St. Marys Golf Club, a venue which has hosted the event for over the past 10 years. The celebration, sponsored each year by the St. Marys Area Chamber of Commerce, is set for Wednesday, July 3.

EQT set to begin fracking wells in Jay Twp.

With plans to drill near a Jay Township watershed on hold, EQT announced at Thursday's meeting of the township Board of Supervisors that they will begin hydraulic fracturing of four wells, at another location in the township, by month's end.
