Arthur G. Hasselman

June 26, 2013

Arthur G. Hasselman, 74, of 115 Pistner Road, St. Marys, died unexpectedly Tuesday, June 25, 2013, at the UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh.
He was born March 7, 1939 in St. Marys, son of the late Michael and Agnes Glass Hasselman.
He was a lifelong resident of the area and was a graduate of Central Catholic High School, Class of 1957. He was a retired employee of Keystone Carbon Company, retiring in 2001 with 43 years of service.
On November 18, 1961 in the Queen of the World Church, he married Betty J. Young, who survives.

North Central keeping close watch on state budget talks

RIDGWAY – With North Central Pennsylvania Regional Planning and Development Commission voting at last month's meeting to take out a nearly quarter of a million dollar line of credit needed to cover expenses like payroll, bills, and rents, the organization has kept a watchful eye on the governor's 2014 budget proposal to see what the future holds.

Elk County Prison inmate charged with possession of contraband

RIDGWAY – An inmate at Elk County Prison has been charged with possession of contraband after corrections officers searching her cell allegedly found prescription drugs in her pillow case.
On June 20, officers searching the Elk County Prison D-Block cell of Sarah Angeline Petitt, 29, of St. Marys, allegedly found a "small baggie containing one and one-half white pills," later identified as Buprenorphine.

Dancers attending national competition

April School of Dance's competition company, DDCC, will proudly travel to their first ever national competition this coming weekend. DDCC's 18 company members along with their teacher and choreographer, Jennifer Blankenship, had an outstanding season with every one of their 18 pieces qualifying for nationals at all four competitions. Two DDCC soloists will be traveling to Atlantic City, N.J. to compete for a national title at Encore DCS. 'Weapons of Mass Destruction' charges filed against St. Marys man in pipe bomb incidents

MARYS – Court documents released Tuesday in the case of a St. Marys man charged with planting two pipe bombs in Elk County last month offer few details and little in the way of clues as to what motivated the accused, 20-year-old Kelly J. Shaffer, to allegedly build and attempt to detonate the explosive devices.

ST. MARYS – A St. Marys man has been criminally charged after police say he used his wife's name to fill out a federal background check in order to buy firearms at a local gun emporium.

Carolyn Kathryn Jane Luchini Miller

Carolyn Kathryn Jane Luchini Miller, 77, of State College and a former Kersey resident died on Tuesday, June 25, 2013 at her residence following an illness of the past several months.
She was born Dec. 24, 1935 in Kersey, daughter of the late Joseph and Catherine Dominica Antonioli Luchini. As an infant her mother passed away and she was raised by Joseph and Mary Antonioli Capuccini and they also preceded her in death.
On May 26, 1962, in the Holy Cross Church in Brandy Camp, she married James Carl Miller and he survives.

Kenneth M. Herzing

Kenneth M. Herzing, 82, of 715 Clark Rd., St. Marys, died on Monday, June 24, 2013 at the Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh as a result of pneumonia and heart problems.
He was born Sept. 3, 1931 in St. Marys, son of the late John A.C. and Bertha Weinzierl Herzing. On Oct. 11, 1953, in the Sacred Heart Church, he married Mary Lou McKnight and she survives.

St. Marys major baseball stars defeat Johnsonburg 17-1 in four innings

The St. Marys Little League major league baseball all stars homered four times on Monday evening at Memorial Park en route to a 17-1 four inning victory over the visiting Johnsonburg squad in the opening round of the District 10 Boys Majors (11-12) North/South combined tournament.
