SMETHPORT â€“ A McKean County District Judge has set bail at $200,000 for a Smethport man charged with rape and related offenses in an incident said to have occurred on June 20 in Keating Township.

Leadership Elk County (LEC) officially started its sixth year in September 2012 with 13 participants from Elk County. This program was developed to address the lack of qualified leadership in rural areas, which is a major concern for many rural communities and the future growth of these communities. To date 83 participants have successfully completed the program from businesses, industry, education, the non-profit sector, police departments and local government agencies.
The diving boards at the St. Marys Community Pool are an often-used feature by swimmers of all ages, though many youngsters without diving experience prefer to simply jump off of them. In an effort to introduce more area residents to some basic diving techniques, diving lessons will be held at the pool beginning next week.
Keystone Diversified Pipe Supply, Inc., located at 114 Stackpole St. in St. Marys, recently held a ribbon-cutting to celebrate the completion of extensive renovations done at the business.

WILLIAMSPORT â€“ The federal government has tacked on a new charge in its case against an Emporium man charged with the Aug. 8, 2012 carjacking and attempted kidnapping of a Citizens and Northern Bank employee.
The new charge filed against Thomas Edward Smith, 58, of Emporium, alleges that he knowingly used a stolen firearm when he ordered the female victim to drive him to the bank at gunpoint, telling her it would be "The worst day of your life."

JOHNSONBURG â€“ A Johnsonburg mother has been criminally charged in connection with a car wreck that seriously injured her four-year-old daughter after police say she was driving on a suspended license following a DUI.
This year the Elk County Community Foundation awarded a total of 97 scholarships to area graduating high school seniors totaling $117,000.
Among the Class of 2013 recipients were 30 students from St. Marys Area High School, 16 students from Elk County Catholic High School, 21 students from Ridgway Area High School, 14 students from Johnsonburg Area High School, five from Kane Area High School, one from Cameron County Area High School and six to students from DuBois Area and Brockway Area high schools.
ST. MARYS â€“ Two individuals have been charged with drug offenses after police reportedly interrupted a drug deal at a Washington Street apartment where they found five individuals in a cloud of marijuana smoke emanating from the building's basement.
