Thompson touts Student Success Act

Congressman Glenn "GT" Thompson (R-5) was in Elk County for a brief luncheon at the Red Fern on Monday afternoon with community representatives and elected officials. During that time he spoke briefly on some of the pressing matters he is involved with in Washington, D.C., among them H.R. 5, the Student Success Act, which would reform the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), which is also commonly known as No Child Left Behind.

Upcoming Wing Fling is going "Totally 80s"

The 80s are being resurrected for the 12th Annual Wing Fling, sponsored by Farmers National Bank and the St. Marys Area Chamber of Commerce.
"This year we thought we would do something different so we went with an 80s theme," said Ashley O'Dell, chamber outreach coordinator.
The event is taking place on Market Street in downtown St. Marys on Friday, Aug. 16 from 6-10 p.m.

At the annual reunion of the Association of the 3rd Armored Division Veterans at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga., Edward H. Kuntz was elected to the Board of Directors and elected treasurer.
Upon entering the United States Army, Kuntz was assigned to the 4th Armored Division, 24th Armored Engineer Battalion, at Fort Hood, Texas, with initial training as a combat engineer and advanced training as a supply specialist.

Ruth Marie Anstrom

Ruth Marie Anstrom, 89, of Ridgway, died Sunday, July 28, 2013, after a prolonged illness. She passed peacefully, surrounded by loved ones at Rustic Manor Personal Care Home in Indiana, Pa.
Ruth was born July 8, 1924 in Toby, daughter of the late Ester Christine (Hedlund) and John Alfred Freeburg.
Ruth graduated as valedictorian of her class at Kersey High School in 1942. She married Carl Richard Anstrom on June 5, 1948.
Ruth was employed as a secretary at the Elliot Company, Pontzer and Pontzer law firm and finished her career as secretary of First Lutheran Church, retiring at age 71.
