Elk County Boulder Dash upcoming

A 20-mile run, walk and hike event sound like fun to you?
If so, the Elk County Boulder Dash event held Saturday, Aug. 17 at 8 a.m. in Ridgway just might be your thing.
The event takes place on 20 miles of State Games Lands 44, just south of Ridgway, featuring about 4,000 feet of vertical rise over the course. The deadline to register online at www.elkcountyboulderdash.com is Thursday, Aug. 1.

Archery a popular summer park program

When thinking of summer programs at the parks things like baseball, basketball, and volleyball typically come to mind. In addition to the traditional 'stick and ball' sports offerings, Memorial Park has been offering an annual archery program for youngsters dating back to the 1980s.

Multiple projects ready for upcoming years

Increased activity throughout the region could possibly lead to increased tourism and job creation thanks to funding from the Appalachian Regional Commission [ARC].
That was the message Wednesday during a North Central Pennsylvania Regional Planning and Development Commission executive committee meeting as Bob Rusiewski, ARC/Economic Development Administration [EDA] programs director, reviewed six project summaries with board members.

No cause reported following investigation

JOHNSONBURG – Law enforcement authorities completed an investigation Thursday but were unable to explain the cause of the July 12 fire at Domtar paper mill in Johnsonburg, saying only that there are "no suspicious circumstances."

No one hurt in fire at well near James City

JAMES CITY – No one was injured Thursday in a spectacular fire at a oil and gas well in the Allegheny National Forest near James City.
About 25 firefighters from the Highland Township Volunteer Fire Department and the Kane Volunteer Fire Department responded to the fire at 10:15 a.m. Thursday.

Service could change rural internet

Aiming to promote broadband service in the 32-county region north of Interstate 80, a primarily rural area, the Northern Tier Middle Mile Broadband Project may vastly improve communication efforts across the state.
That was part of the message Wednesday during a meeting of the North Central Pennsylvania Regional Planning and Development Commission's board of directors as Frank Yoder, broadband services manager for the Pa. State Police, Statewide Radio Network Division, gave a 40-minute presentation on the intricacies of the project.

Commission receives rough draft of budget

Officials on Wednesday acknowledged receipt of an organizational budget draft at the North Central Pennsylvania Regional Planning and Development Commission although no official adoption was approved.

Mike Proudfit Night set for Aug. 5

In just over a week members of the community are once again encouraged to come together for events in honor of Michael Proudfit, former St. Marys Community Pool lifeguard who was killed in a car crash in February 2011. The inaugural Michael B. Proudfit Memorial 5K Walk/Run and Mike Proudfit Night were held last year with much success, and both events will return this year, on Aug. 4 and 5, respectively.

Residents share views on Sunday hunting

With Sunday hunting once again becoming a hot topic in Pennsylvania due to the Lancaster County-based Hunters United for Sunday Hunting asking a federal judge to throw out the state's longstanding ban, The Daily Press recently asked readers on our Facebook page their thoughts on the matter.
The response indicated considerable support for hunting to be allowed on Sundays, though some individuals suggested that certain restrictions be put in place.
